Neon Dynamite Live at The Knitting Factory

Never judge a band by its Myspace”, goes the adage– and rarely does it ring as true as it does in the case of Neon Dynamite. A quick online lookup promised a run-of-the-mill indie-rock-soul-funk outfit; not particularly sucky, mind you, but nothing to write home about.

I realized how sorely wrong I was about two seconds into their first song – by then they were already the taking venue by storm: with their undeniably charismatic stage presence and airtight, four-on-the-floor grooves, Neon Dynamite commanded an in-your-face stage presence, their music imploring a (somewhat nonexistent, this being a Tuesday night) audience to get on their feet and party. You could instantly see that this band is all about those live moments, about going on stage and laying a beat tighter than you-know-who’s-you-know-what. Here, at last, was an indie band that’s all about giving people a good time, damn it. Scott Laughlin’s drumming and Dave “Boxcar” Smith’s bass playing was masterfully glued together, and sprinkled with healthy doses of groove for good measure. Anthony Rubbo’s guitar chops and Kurt Thum’s synth wizardry did what audiences always wish for but rarely ever get – that is, they complemented the songs perfectly with killer riffs, syncopated hits and endless energy that served the music, rather than tried to take over. And as far as lead singers go, Nathan Lacy (the only band member who displayed a genre-appropriate fashion sense) is as energetic, committed, and engaging as they come; he lives inside his songs, and it seems that for him, every show is his chance of inviting the audience to come over and check out his awesome crib.

ND pic 2 179x300 Live Review Neon Dynamite at The Knitting Factory

There are two things one needs to keep in mind in order to understand why Neon Dynamite are startlingly unique even at such an early point in their career. First, the nature of the music they play requires a seamless cohesion between all the members – and while it sounds as if they’ve been playing together for longer than their lifetimes combined, the current incarnation of the band is, impressively enough, only less than a year old.

The second point – and this is a touchy subject when it comes to indie bands’ live performances – has to do with the way they viewed the audience and the gig.

Imagine going on stage for soundcheck, taking a quick look at the room and realizing there are more people on stage than in the audience. What do you do?

For Neon Dynamite, the answer was clear: you plug in, tune up, and play the best damn show of your life. Even in a midweek, low-attendance gig, they’re fully aware of who they are, and more importantly, where they are going; and thus, they rocked a virtually empty Knitting Factory as hard as they would have rocked a full Yankee Stadium. Playing your heart out to empty venues is a clichéd rite of passage for new musicians; and yet, few are the groups who actually take it to heart and make the best out of every live situation. Neon Dynamite is one of those groups.

ND pic 3 300x179 Live Review Neon Dynamite at The Knitting Factory

By the end of their set the place filled up a bit (good vibes have magnetic powers, apparently), and with a few dozen hipsters in the audience, Lacy saw fit to leave the stage and serenade an unsuspecting audience member, following with a short nap(!) on the probably-filthy floor. You could almost sense his itching for wilder stage antics, given a larger audience. I don’t think he’ll have to wait too long before he gets his wish; with their trustworthy grooves, musical cohesion and take-no-prisoners approach to live performance, Neon Dynamite is definitely a band to keep on your watch list. Catch a show while tickets are still cheap – there’s a good chance their relative anonymity will not last long.

A Raven’s Sorrow is an interesting band out of Boston, that sings about whether life is worth living.  The trio, Jason Percival, Jeff Glazier, and Joseph Cox, expect to release their debut album Chrysalis this winter.

“It is a funny thing how all of our regrets, anxieties, fears, and discontent fill us with such a strong desire to escape life, but yet also make us feel alive,” says Percival. “Perhaps it is this struggle between wanting to make an end yet feeling obligated to endure that makes us human, and ultimately gives unyielding truth to the music we create. “

The band finally decided to move forward with the production of the final releases of “Chrysalis.”  And that led Jeff to thinking: “Why have I been holding off for so long on producing and recording the final versions?”

Here are his thoughts on the subject:

With respect to releasing albums, I think there are two kinds of artists out there.  First there are those who tend to release albums rapidly.  I see them everywhere around me.  Constantly buzzing with ideas, throwing whatever comes to mind to the wind, creating new music every few days.  They churn out albums as if they’re a dime a dozen.  Then there are artists who make every record a painstaking experience because they want to ensure it’s exactly right before releasing it to the world.  That they have dotted every “i” and crossed every “t,” and that they are saying exactly what they mean.  They are what we call perfectionists, and can take an eternity to make their next musical statement.

But I got to thinking, is that really why I’ve been holding off for so long?

Nearly all of my songs come from the demons of my past.  I basically live there.  It’s all that I know, and reliving all of that anger, guilt and fear is virtually all that I love.  I think it’s fair to say that collectively the two albums cover almost everything meaningful I’ve experienced.  Leaving nothing new to write about.  And now, sitting here in thought, I can only come to conclude that perhaps by holding onto them I am, in a sense, keeping myself there, in a safe, comforting place.  A sort of distraction or a shelter, if you would.  A way to avoid having to create new experiences.   A way to avoid moving on.  I believe that for some people, moving on may never be possible.

In the Indie Band Guru’s opinion, these are the two extremes that artists fall into, but they must find a way to enter the middle ground of turning out high quality music regularly without oversaturating the market with songs that are not of their best quality.  We are looking forward to seeing where Chrysalis falls in this spectrum when it comes out this winter.

Introduction to the Indie Music scene

By Indie Band Guru | Filed in Indie Scene

I came across this article (not written by us) and wanted to share it with you.  Do you think this is a good introduction to the indie music scene for an outsider that doesn’t know anything?

Indie music is a type of alternative rock, which exists in the independent music world. The word is periodically used to refer to all underground music, and is the opposite of indie pop music.Indie rock music places an emphasis on electric instruments such as guitars and drums. Musicians in the genre are also known for using abstract sounds. The term indie rock is used because musicians work under smaller record labels instead of the major record companies.

Though indie rock is not technically a genre, it is considered to represent the underground culture in many aspects.Indie artists are known for demanding a large amount of creative control over their music, and this is something, which often alienates them from larger companies.Indie artists will strictly rely on word of mouth, tours, and independent radio stations in order to promote their music. Many of the popular artists will end up becoming popular with mainstream audiences, and may be signed by large record labels.

In the US indie music is considered to be a spin off from alternative rock. The movement is believed to have been started during the 1970s or 1980s. The indie rock music of the 1980s had sounds, which were described as being heavy and distorted. By the 1990s, indie music groups such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam became a main stream, and the genre became more widespread. Once the genre became popular, major record companies begin investing large amounts of money in it.

Once this happened, the term “alternative rock” became more of a misnomer. Traditionally, many musicians who have signed with major record companies were considered to be “sell outs” by their hardcore fans. My Original Music is an indie music site located at myoriginalmusic.com. Here you can find music by independent artists from all over the world. Today, indie rock is a term which has come to describe a wide variety of music. The term indie rock has been applied to psychedelic folk, synth pop, and post punk.

Sometimes the term indie rock becomes blurred, and some believe that the word will soon disappear much like alternative rock did. Mainstream artists such as Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys have been known to reach high levels on the indie music charts, especially in the United Kingdom. Some mainstream artists have even been signed to independent record labels. Many popular indie music artists become a main stream, and once this happens, they are no longer independent.

Despite the fact that many indie artists become main stream, this is not always the case. In fact, most independent artists are not mainstream, and do not wish to be. Money may be a motivating factor, but many artists play their music for the passion and not the money. Many major record labels exert a large amount of control over their artists, and the music which is sold is more often the product of the record companies than the artists themselves. Because of this, many artists have fought with the major record labels over creative control of their music.

The writers of this article have their own interesting site.  www.musicjuice.net  Check it out

Great Promo Ideas From Last Nights Vice

By Indie Band Guru | Filed in Knowledge To Get Known

I love it when I come across a band who has great music that also understands that they have to work hard to get known and are willing to invest both time and money in the band to achieve thier goals.

Let Indie Band Guru introduce you to Last Nights Vice, a phenomenal rock band from St. Louis, Missouri.  They have both the talent and sheer determination to make it.  Thier stage show demands attention and seems to gather them more fans with each show.

last nights vice live Great Promo Ideas From Last Nights Vice

Where Last Nights Vice really stand out though is in thier promotion efforts.  The band even has a mascot.   Speakerhead is a big box they made with a working speaker that they wear on thier heads and play thier iPods out of.  LNV uses Speakerhead at both local and national shows blasting thier music for all to hear.

Last Nights Vice also has been promoting thier new album ‘Perfect Little Noise’ with promo videos they made with the help of some movie maker friends.  Another reason why networking is so important.  Check out the videos HERE.

The band also orders glossy, full colored flyers to promote shows and the release of the new CD.  The flyers also include download codes that can be redeemed on thier website for a free track.  When I asked them how they afford it all they said “Mostly we pay for them with money we make from shows and merch sales.  We decided years ago that we would be in the red for a long time.  We definitely pump a lot more money in that we get out.  It is actually cheaper to do a 5000 bulk run of glossy flyers though.  At about $0.03 a piece, as opposed to black and white paper flyers from Kinko’s that cost about $0.07 a piece.”

The bottom line is, Last Nights Vice is willing to do whatever it takes to get thier music out there to the masses.  Hard work pays off.  Nad it helps that the music is damn good.  Check them out for yourself at www.lastnightsvice.com

Here is something every band should do. Get videos of yourself up on YouTube! It is damn easy and great promo. One of our favorite hard working bands, Lil Daggers from Florida, show just how easy it is. Video your live show and use some free editing software from the web, and you can make a video that gets some attention to your music.
Here is Lil Daggers doing “Hungry” live at Don Pedro’s with some funky video editing mixed in. The sound isn’t great but you get the point.

Let’s see your videos!

Dirty Projectors Decribe Their Song Writing Process

By Indie Band Guru | Filed in Interview

I came across this and thought fellow indie musicians would appreciate it. The leader of Dirty Projectors, David Longstreth, took talk about how he crafts his music from a wide assortment of sounds, voices, and anything else with a touch of inspiration, as displayed in the Dirty Projector’s 2009 release “Bitte Orca”.  He isn’t the best public speaker but it is nice to get inside the mind of a talented musician.

Feel free to share your music writing process.  Everyone works differently but as long as good music keeps coming out, we all win.

Is Your Album Really finished?

By Indie Band Guru | Filed in Knowledge To Get Known

Thanks to technology today it has become so much easier to actually record an album of your own.  A good band with a decent ear no longer has to shell out a ton of money for the privilege of recording in a studio.  You can now have your own studio right in the basement and record a damn good album.

But once you get your heart and soul recorded on tape, or more likely digital media, is it really finished and ready to be released to he world?  In a word, NO!  There will be many little problems on the recording such as pops, clicks, equalization issues, etc.  This is where the services of a good Mastering Engineer come in.

mastering equipment close up e1272582786759 Is Your Album Really finished?

The music mastering studio is very different from a normal audio recording studio. The room is set up in such a way as to perfect the acoustics of the room to accurately monitor sound.  The mastering engineer needs to hear in detail each mix.  By working with an experienced mastering engineer, the recording artist is also open to more creative opinions and technical advice.

Your recorded material, ideally at the original resolution, is processed using equalization, compression, limiting, noise reduction and other mastering processes such as editing, pre-gapping, leveling, fading in and out, noise reduction and other signal restoration and enhancement processes.  The songs are also put in the proper order, commonly referred to as assembly or (track) sequencing.

In our travels we came across a great company for these needed services.  Check out Sound Affair Ltd.  They have been doing it for over 30 years and have put there touch on some great albums.  They have the only complete Focusrite Blue Mastering system in North America.  Trust us it makes a difference.  Thy are located in Santa Ana, California but you do not need to even attend your mastering session.  you can upload your files directly to them using FTP on their website.  They offer test masterings and free consultations.  When you have the need, get in touch and give them a try.
