IBG Interview – 8 Questions With… Big Sexy

Music is truly a worldwide power. Within it we can connect with societies and movements all over the world. Our recent discovery Big Sexy is doing their part to connect the world and make a difference.

We caught up with the multi-national group to get a little deeper into who they are and the music they make. Enjoy the interview here:

First off, how did the name Big Sexy come about?

A young jiu-jitsu fighter who attends my class gave me the nickname. It caught on within the ranks so I felt it was fitting to use that name for the band. Often, when he sees me, he reminds me that he was the one who named the band. Haha, we have a good time with it.

How would you describe the band’s sound?

It can vary, obviously, from jazz to the blues, from folk to rock and roll. Alex is the maestro and he certainly has created a sound. It’s often that we’re compared to the Eagles but we definetley have some songs with a little more edge to them. I think our sound is unique to Big Sexy.

Which bands/artists have had the biggest influence on Big Sexy?

Alex is a Beatles fan, a Pink Floyd fan, and a Joe Bonamassa fan. I’m more influenced by David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, and Paul Simon – just to name a few.

What pushes the band to create new music?

It’s really Alex. He pushed me to let him compose a song of mine and then, from there, it all took off. The songs started pouring out of me and after I wrote 5 albums worth, I needed a break. Alex had some songs, too, so we knew we had plenty of material. So far, we are half way through the third album so I think I’ll be involved with this project for a good period of time going forward.

You teamed up with Outside Records recently. Tell us about the experience working with them?

Outside Records gives me complete control over the production of songs related to my band. Alex and I work closely together to make sure the standards of the studio are met with every song. It seems we all think alike since it’s been real easy to get along with all the musicians and everyone involved in the studio.

Big Sexy has been releasing a steady stream of songs. How do these songs come together? Tell us about the songwriting process.

Like I said earlier, after the first song was recorded, which was, River of Shame, the rest of the songs came flowing out. I believe Alex thought it was going to be a one time thing but then I started submitting songs to him daily and it just sort of caught on fire. I have an office near my home where I do all my song writing. I have a recording studio attached so I can tinker around in there with every idea that comes my way. Typically, after writing the song, I will create a melody line and sing the song as I hear it. Then, I send it to Alex, who works his magic with it by refining the melody and adding the harmony. From there, we choose the instruments we want to help tell the story of the song with. Then, Alex sings the song with a rudimentary musical structure and sends it to me. After that, the dream comes to life.

What do you hope the listener takes away from your music?

We want to be known as serious entertainers who bring a high level of professionalism to the art of music. Our sound, and the stories immersed in it, are meant to provoke our listeners to think a tad while simply enjoying the sound we have created. For instance, in the song, New Mexico Nights, we wanted to make the listener fill like they were out in the wilderness of New Mexico. We wanted to paint a picture of that night and the anguish the narrator is in, while also bringing about a melody that was enjoyable to the ear. Hopefully, we succeeded.

What does the future hold for Big Sexy?

My goal is to have 4 studio albums finished before hitting the road to tour. I think that will give us plenty of material for 3 sets at any event we are at. I’m looking forward to taking the band on the road and sharing our music all over the world. We are grateful to all of our fans, and of course, we are grateful to you for being gracious enough to interview me. At the time, due to the war, Alex is sort of trapped within Ukraine. Often times, he has to wait out drone bombings in order to get the electrical grid back on track. I don’t think there’s another band in the world dealing with the matters that we are. Let’s hope this war ends soon so one of the great composers in the world, Alex Goroshko, can share his brilliance to the people of the world.
