A musician’s environment can definitely effect his musical style. Certain genres are just much more readily accepted in certain areas while in other places it is hard to find a scene that your music fits into. Sometimes the best thing for an artist to do is move to a place where his style is more common. We found a good example of this in the Billy K Band.
Bill Kelley grew up in the Central Valley of California, maybe not the best area for his love of country music. He grew up with the proper upbringing though, operating farm equipment and heavy machinery at an early age. Being outdoors, fishing, hunting and playing a guitar came natural to him. Billy wanted to pursue his musical dream so eventually he moved to Oklahoma. Billy K has had the opportunity to meet many interesting people such as George Foreman, Deion Sanders, and country music stars Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert. He now finds himself in the perfect place to pursue his dreams with his bandmembers he considers brothers, Danny Purser(Lead Guitar) and Jaimee Anderson(Drums) .
The Billy K Band recently cut their debut album Outrun The Rain at The Tracking Room in Nashville Tennessee. The album opens with the fun song ‘Shoot Me At The Jukebox’. The band fills out a wall of sound that puts the listener in the right mood immediately for the rest of the album. Billy’s voice is perfect for the red dirt country style and versatile enough for him to sing pop to ballads. He shows off this voice especially on ‘Enjoy The Ride’ and the slowdown of ‘I’m Looking At Her Now’. He also knows how to tell a great story on tracks like ‘Girls Gone Rebel’. The title track ‘Outrun The Rain’ is a great simple song to relax with and get yourself sucked in a country mood.
