IBG Interview – 9 Questions With… Carly Grey

The power of music is undeniable. It has helped so many people, not only through listening to it, but also by the people that make it. Creating music is well known to act as therapy. When an artist goes all in to follow their musical dreams this creates all kinds of power. Our recent discovery Carly Grey is a prime example of this.

We had the chance to chat with the up and coming artist as she prepares to release her debut single “Envy Of The Room.” Enjoy the interview here:

What is it that draws you to create music?

Music has a way of evoking emotion beyond the capacity words alone can express. There is a reason behind the stereotype of an angsty teenager blasting Nu Metal from their room refusing to talk to mom and dad about whatever inconvenience happened that day in the school cafeteria. Music helps us process complicated feelings when we aren’t sure how yet to express them yet verbally … This is why I want to help others therapeutically through my music.

How would you describe the Carly Grey sound?

You know those albums you come across where every song sounds the same, but with different lyrics? Yeah, that’s my pet peeve too. My goal is to build an eclectic sound where listeners aren’t left bored, differentiating each song from one another while staying true to my passion for alternative, punk rock, and power pop.

Which artists have been the biggest influence on you?

I love the edgy, raw vocals from Daisy Grenade and polished, mixed vocals from Hayley Williams. I have seen Ronnie Radke from Falling in Reverse live a handful of times and the genuineness and impenitence in his stage presence is undoubtedly admirable.

How has the move to Baltimore, Maryland affected your music?

As cliché as it sounds, growing up in a rural environment, I always felt like an outsider. It wasn’t until I moved to the city that I finally found “my people”. I remember the exact moment I was at a show in a crowd full of people where I felt like I finally, truly belonged. Musicians are some of the most welcoming, creative, hardworking, and genuine people I have ever met. I wouldn’t have had the confidence to pursue music myself if it weren’t for their support and inspiration.

How does a song come together for you? Tell us about your songwriting process.

Songwriting has become part of my daydream routine. When a set of good lyrics come to mind, I make sure to jot it down in the moment whether that be on scrap paper or the notes app on my phone. I always start with the chorus because that is half the battle-you can’t have a good song without a good chorus. For melodies, voice memos are my best friend especially if inspiration strikes while I’m driving which tends to be the case most of the time!

What do you hope the listener takes away from your music?

I hope to create music that resonates with listeners and satisfies some kind of emotional need or desire they have-even if it’s just a happy-go-lucky anthem to sing along to on the car ride home!

Share some advice for other artists trying to rise up in the crowded independent music industry?

You can be as successful as you want to be… It all depends on how much hard work and effort you want to put into your passion. Stay relentless.

What can you tell us about your upcoming debut single “Envy of the Room?”

“Envy of the Room” is about being abandoned by someone who you were insanely close to without rhyme or reason. It is a song of wistful thinking as you come to realize how toxic they really were in hindsight…not just to you, but to everyone else too.

What is next for Carly Grey?

My energy right now is dedicated to recording and finalizing “Envy of the Room” for its release near the end of November 2024! I am working on a few cover songs to sing at open mic nights here shortly and then it’s time to expand upon my discography. Right now, it’s all about getting myself out there and building a following.
