Being yourself is always great advice for an artist building a brand. Our recent find Kay is living his best life doing just that. We caught up with the rising R&B star to get a little deeper behind the scenes. Enjoy the interview:
With all the wild monikers in music nowadays what made you decide to stick with Kay?
Kay is natural. It is a name that I have always gone by and it is simple to remember.
How would you describe your sound?
I would say the best way to describe it is contemporary nostalgia. What I mean is, I bring a fresh modern style but give you that old RnB feeling that made you want to fall in love.
Which artists have had the biggest influence on you?
I grew up on a lot of Neo-Soul so naturally I became a fan of artist like Lauryn Hill and Musiq Soulchild. Some of my other influences include Stevie Wonder, D’Angelo, and Usher.
What drives you to create music to share?
Just sharing my experiences. I want to be able to give people those timeless classics that are played at the barbecue or at a wedding.
How does a song come together for you? What is your songwriting process?
Sometimes it can be an idea that comes to mind or a mood I am in. Other times its the vibe that the beat gives and I just run with it.
What do you hope a listener takes away from a Kay song?
I hope they are able to connect with the song and that the song moves them in the way that I intended it to.
Give us something you have learned to share other rising artists?
Just be organic and be yourself. That’s what works best for me.
What does the future hold for Kay?
I am going to release a follow up ep that will have a few surprise features.
