For many musicians, music is a part of who they are. It comes from them freely and soothes their soul. Our recent find Sanya N’kanta is one such artist that puts his real thoughts and energy into his songwriting and lets the process give back to him as well.
We had a chance to chat with the talented artist/producer to get a deeper look inside his process. Enjoy the interview:
First off, what is it that drives you to create original music?
It’s my therapy in life and my favorite way to express myself, my beliefs and communicate ideas and other perspectives.
How would you describe the Sanya N’kanta sound?
People have been describing my sound as of late as Americana Roots Rock, with elements of my Jamaican reggae heritage intertwined.
Which artists have had the biggest influence on you?
Artists with a unique style have the most significant influence on me. Bands that carve out their sound and make me think I’ve never heard anything like that before
What is your songwriting process? How does a song come together for you?
My best songs are written fast with no laboring approach. I often record as I write, so most of the final instrumentation that you hear on my records were the original takes. I rarely will go back and re-record instruments or vocals, for that matter. Trusting myself is the key to my process.
You definitely have something to say in your songs. What do you hope the listener takes away from your music?
I hope the listener enjoys it, and it moves them in some way or form. I hope they have their interpretations and symbolic meaning in their lives.
It is great to see new music coming with “Highway Road.” How were you able to push through, what was a difficult year for live performances?
One day at a time is the only way. I’ve been very studio-focused during the past two years, and it has been my antidote. Live performances are so challenging right now, but hopefully, things will ultimately turn around in 2022.

What is on the horizon for Sanya N’kanta?
I am looking forward to getting back in the studio after a few months off. I’ll be recording a lot, collaborating with other artists, and playing live again as soon as our COVID situation has improved.
