Jackie Venson – The Devil’s Hands And An Angel’s Voice

Austin born and based blues musician Jackie Venson recently released a video for “Rollin On” from her her latest album, Jackie Venson Live At Strange Brew, which hit audiences this past September.

The track beautifully crescendos from a cool and slow start to Jackie Venson straight wailing on her Stratocaster accompanied by an organ solo.

If you haven’t heard the album, you should definitely check out the rest of it on Venson’s Soundcloud.

While “Rollin’ On” showcases her classic blues chops, songs such as “Lost in Time” and “Instinct” present a much more rocksteady and funky side to Venson’s music.

Venson released her debut album, The Light In Me, in 2014 to much success. The Texas based music publication, Blues Blast Magazine says, “Venson also has that intangible magic that makes her music sound effortless even when it is obvious that a lot of work has gone into it.”

Since then, Venson released multiple EPs, a B-sides record and her aforementioned live album. This past fall she even appeared on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert backing up Mac Miller and Anderson Paak’s performance of “Dang.”

People often associate the blues with gruff and gravely singers such as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and Howlin’ Wolf — vocalist with hell fire caught in their throats just trying to get it out. While Venson really can shred like one of the greats, her angelic vocals and unique blend of blues, R&B and reggae on her recent album deliver a fresh take on the genre that started it all in America.

Venson begins her next tour March 31 and will perform shows in New York at Pianos in Manhattan May 5 and L.I.C. Bar on Long Island May 7.
