LD Levy Soothes and Shocks With ‘d n a n d’

Sometimes when diving into a new record you must be ready for the jolt of hearing something truly different. That is one of my joys as a reviewer but even I can be impressed with the uniqueness at times. That day has come again with d n a n d, the latest release from L.D. Levy.

The talented mulit-instrumentalist is a true veteran of the Jazz scene. From touring Europe as a woodwinds soloist to playing alongside some other masters of the genre such as Beaver Harris, Ed Blackwell, Don Cherry, and Richard Davis. The dedication to the craft by L.D. Levy has not gone unnoticed as he is considered a self-taught virtuoso.

For this latest release d n a n d, L.D. Levy offers a captivating journey into the depths of improvisational jazz. Ten tracks that will take the listener out of their mainstream mind and into a world of sonic discovery. The multi-instrumental talent is on full display as Levy handles bass clarinet, alto flute, alto sax, piano, and bass. Paul Westfahl was brought in to set the beat on drums.

Let ‘Maps’ be your guide through this L.D. Levy journey

As the album opens with “Maps” and its walking piano bassline a sense of mystery and introspection are set in play. A  jarring cacophony of sound will grab the listener suddenly reaffirming that L.D. Levy is in complete control for the next hour. “Smoke” is a similar song that plays on that dark vibe to set the peculiar tone. Sit back, relax, and enjoy.

This is music that demands your full attention, a willingness to dive headfirst into the abyss. But for those brave enough to take the plunge, L.D. Levy offers a deeply rewarding experience. It’s a sonic representation of unraveling the complexities of existence, a journey through the messy, yet beautiful blueprint of sound.

To truly be mesmerized by the pure talent of L.D. Levy, explore the closing “Saxophone per se I & II.” Improvisation is on full display as he expresses himself like only he can.

The album is a testament to Levy’s artistic vision and his ability to create music that is both challenging and deeply rewarding. It’s a must-listen for fans of experimental jazz and anyone seeking a truly unique musical experience.
