Phil Hurley Rises From the Ashes With ‘The Firebird Sessions’

There is an amazing power of music to find a way to reach the world exactly when it should, even if that means being delayed by random circumstances. This musical fate has ruled for centuries and has delivered another new set of music in the form of Phil Hurley’s new record The Firebird Sessions.

The singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has been involved in music for most of his life. Starting in his pre-teen years singing in bands with his brother, Phil Hurley has had a wild ride in the music industry. From playing professionally at age 14 to touring with Tracy Bonham to being a big part of the 1990’s Seattle scene, the journey has been full of experiences. The biggest “fame” to date for Phil Hurley was with his band the Gigolo Aunts and their single “Where I Find My Heaven” which hit the top 30  in the UK Singles Chart early in 1995.

More recently Phil Hurley decided to step into the spotlight on his own with a solo career. After writing, performing, and producing all of the material himself (with the help of some trusted and talented friends), the hard drive containing the album crashed leaving a mess of digital files to reconstruct. But the music had to come to fruition so Phil Hurley grabbed his beloved 1966 Gibson Firebird and the The Firebird Sessions EP was reborn.

‘Failing Heart’ by Phil Hurley

The 5 track record opens with “Failing Heart” and its energetic indie rock feel. The churning guitars punctuated the steady beat to get your blood flowing. Phil Hurley delivers emotional vocals with passion and an energy that is tough to top. Some nice guitar solos fill out the track.

The pace slows down some on “Questions Of The Ages” but the emotion turns up even higher. There is a real story here for all to be a part of. A slight country/folk feel creeps in to reach out to the listener. On “Border Town Girl” this continues as all the instruments come together for a full tapestry of sound to sit behind another great story. Hurley’s storytelling is a piece that makes his songs truly stand out.

The closer “Why Wyoming” dives a little deeper in the country vibe as some sliding guitar sounds stretch out. A straight beat lets the vocals be the focus once again. Strong vocal harmonies welcome everyone to join in.

Overall The Firebird Sessions EP is a great expanse of the Phil Hurley solo sound. His songwriting skills have been strong for decades now with no sign of slowing down. Good music will always find a way.
