Sometimes, we are introduced to certain types of music that provide powerful lyrics, and amazing guitar solos and drumming sequences. Other times, we find music that gives us a feeling beyond mere words.
Roza Roza might not be an artist that you have heard about, primarily due to their mysterious nature. You’re less likely to have ever seen a picture of them and, if you Google them, you won’t find much at all. You have to search deep into the depths of the online world to discover their sound, a blend of jazz and techno that seems to find itself a place nestled perfectly in the realms of the house genre.
Roza Roza’s three track vinyl titled – (yes, that’s the actual title of the album — it’s not just a random dash, I promise) was released on February 26. The tracks it features are titled “-,” “–,” and “—.” I know it looks like Morse code, but I assure you it’s much more tantalizing than it appears.
Listening to the first track “-“, I was instantly transported back to 2011. I had just turned 18 and was invited to a club for the first time. It was cramped and dark, but the room exploded in colors and sounds as what I was informed was “house music” started playing. The two female DJ’s jumped around wearing huge headphones and everyone seemed to fall into a trance.
Roza Roza: Not Your Average House
I can only imagine this song being played at that time, in that place. Although the initial 30 seconds may appear to be repetitive, when you keep listening you hear subtle vocals in the background. You can’t make out exactly what they’re saying so much as you can feel it. The voice echoes for about three seconds and moves back into an electronic blend that will enchant you.
The track slows to a piano melody at about the 3:45 minute mark and you escape to somewhere peaceful, but it is not long before you are brought back to a dance club floor with the lights flashing and everything seems to move in slow motion. The entire experience of this track leaves you wanting more.
I would have to say that Roza Roza is more of an internal experience than anything. There are some songs that you’ll be introduced to in this lifetime that will simply go through one ear and out the other, but Roza Roza gives you music that you can feel.
