There have been many great musical influences through the years that have brought us to this amazing time in the current music scene. Artists have been able to pick and choose the best parts of the past and put a modern spin to create fresh new music. Our recent discovery Social Circle combines the best of both worlds.
The foursome from Lafayette, Louisiana puts a modern twist on the classic 80’s synthpop genre. The Social Circle sound pulses with positivity and a party atmosphere. Their self-titled debut album raised some eyebrows with songs like “Kiss Me Like You Mean It” and “55th Street”.

We had a chance to catch up with the band and get a little insight into where they came from and where they are headed. Enjoy the interview here:
What is the story behind the name Social Circle?
The name Social Circle is meant to encompass everyone that keeps this project going. It doesn’t just mean the 4 of us on stage. It includes our studio engineer, our management, photographers we shoot with, our best friends that come to every show, the fans that listen to our music. It’s this all-inclusive idea that anyone stepping into our vicinity and getting to know how weird and fun we are can be a part of that fun, too.
Your sound is familiar yet different. How would you describe it?
We call our sound “nostalgic synth-pop.” It’s inspired by so many vintage sounds from late 80’s and early 90’s new wave, as well as the music that we hear and love on the radio today. We strive to create this unique, ambient, vibrant sound that can one day be unmistakably-us, but still makes you smile and say “Hey that also sounds like such-and-such!”
Who are some of your musical influences?
Our musical influences span decades. Older names like Phil Collins, Prince, David Bowie, Madonna, The Real McCoy. Newer influences include names like Empire of the Sun, The 1975, Years & Years, HAIM, LANY, and Capital Cities.
How has the Lafayette, Louisiana scene helped develop your sound?
Lafayette, Louisiana has been such an integral part of what we do. The biggest factor has been the people that have come in and out of our project that are all influenced by similar or even different sounds that have inspired us, pushed us, or even just validated us into taking the direction we’ve wound up taking. Our actual social circle in Lafayette is an insanely inspiring one.
What is your songwriting process?
Our songwriting process varies from song to song. Our newest song literally came from one person in one sitting start to finish. Some of our songs we all sat in the studio and bounced ideas back and forth to create. Sometimes it starts with a cool beat or synth patch. Sometimes it starts with a melody or lyric. It’s an inconsistent but rewarding process.
What advice would you give to other bands on the rise?
Keep working and never stop. This isn’t an easy career option in the slightest, and it takes more than everything you’ve got sometimes. But you have to know that you want it. That you’re being honest and being the most creative, kind, and approachable you that you can be, and doing whatever it takes. Keep making connections and going to shows and events and meeting bands and managers and photographers. The coolest opportunities come from the most coincidental places sometimes.
What is next for Social Circle?
Social Circle’s next goal is to release a new single and music video and ride the wave of traction that it hopefully gets. And while we’re doing that, keep writing new music and working on our set and taking everything to the next level, both in and off stage.
