Young Lil Egg Roll Opens Up His ‘Palace’

We are al in this crazy life journey together. It may not be through personal interaction. But we are always able to connect through music. Our recent find Young Lil Egg Roll hopes to do just that with his new album Palace.

The lo-fi rapper got his start in 2018 and has been slowly building a fan base in the underground scene since then. March 2020 saw Young Lil Egg Roll release his 14 track full-length album Palace

On tracks like ‘Inkspill’, we get a soulful R&B style beat with the rapper pouring out his lyrics with free abandon. There are real thoughts being shared here. Young Lil Egg Roll lets it all out.

The beat picks up a little on ‘Sitting In A Room Of Silence’ with a pep being added but still a smoothed out almost romantic sound. The verses share that same sultry vibe in their delivery. As we get towards the end of the album, we are all chilled out with the tone that has been set by Young Lil Egg Roll. With ‘Angels” that continues including some sax and pretty keyboard sounds laying it down while the lyrics reach deep into the listener’s soul.

We had the chance to chat with the young rapper and get a little deeper into his growth. Enjoy the interview:

First off, where did the name Young Lil Egg Roll come from?

I was beginning a video game and was given a chance for a name and I picked Lil Max Egg Roll because I found it amusing, and about a month later, in September 2018 I created the name Young Lil Egg Roll to make music as a joke but it just kept evolving to what we have now.

How would you describe your sound?

Lo-fi, laid back mixed with a bit of distortion, showing in the songs like Palace and Run Up. The Lo-fi style is shown in the songs Sitting In a Room Of Silence, Lost Days, Free and Angels.

Which artists have had the biggest influence on you?

Kid Cudi, Mac Miller, Kanye West, Earl Sweatshirt, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Vince Staple, Joey Badass, MF Doom and Chief Keef.

What is your songwriting process? How does a song come to you?

I simply think of a subject I’m passionate about and then begin rhyming words and lines that focus on that subject, I try to make each verse a different subject but similar to the main idea to keep the song interesting no matter the length, to keep the listener intrigued

Your new album Palace is quite the undertaking. What can you tell us about putting it together?

It was originally meant to be an album called Snake, which changed a lot over time but was eventually scrapped for the time being. Than, the Multiuniversal Quest For Love, also being scrapped after about a month of production. Hopefully, if the deluxe releases it will feature Snake and MQFL outtakes and Palace demos. The only song of these two albums that was featured on Palace was Free, being originally made in August 2019 but the new version with the new beat was recorded February 2020. Palace began being written around Christmas 2019 with the writing being finished by the start of January 2020. I began recording the album late January and it was finished completely in 2 days. I took heavy inspiration from Mac Miller and Kanye West and I would consider this album to be by far my best work.

How do you hope to connect with the listener through your music?

Give inspiration to the listener to act on things, to continue. I want to aim to show that the listener is not alone in their situations they face. I hope to intrigue them to listen to the full album as it tells stories throughout the albums.

Give us a look at the future of Young Lil Egg Roll.

I’m currently working on 3 projects. I plan to continue my sound farther into a calm style while keeping simplistic parts that keep the typical rap style. This will allow me to evolve more I believe instead of keeping to one genre or style and leaves more opportunities for differing sounds. The first project I’m working on is entitled 135 and is a remix mixtape where I will be rapping over Kanye West, Mac Miller, XXXTentacion, Tyler the Creator and others already popularized beats.

The second project is a group project for Ocean Gang Records but is currently in its starting stages so there’s not much I can say about it because I would like to leave the element of surprise. My third project, Strwbry is planned to be my second album to be officially released and is planned to be a more differing style to it than Palace. Also, there’s most likely a 22 song deluxe edition of Palace releasing around June.
