Listen to Fist of Five’s New Album ‘Sparrow Road’

Fist of Five gained notoriety in the late 2000’s, touring with heavy hitters like Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, and Hinder. Getting their start in Oklahoma City, their sound and style soon coursed through the Midwest and onward. The band became known for their live shows, combining classical theatre with modern music to create art that is more than the sum of its parts.

After 13 years on hiatus, Fist of Five are back with Sparrow Road. The project begins with “The Dance,” a cinematic opener, full of drama and excitement. The band creates tension with slow instrumentals, building up from subdued piano to powerful guitars.

“Can’t Be Over” is an acoustic ballad that shows off the band’s songwriting. The theatric delivery lends itself to the storytelling of the song, driving home the narrative. In latter half the song evolves into a fleshed out track, full of vibrant instrumentation, breathing new life into the track.

The title track “Sparrow Road” embodies the sound that Fist of Five excel at. A full arena rock anthem, this song exemplifies the kind of energy the band is known for. This track is cathartic and electrifying before taking a detour through the band’s different sonic textures.

“Imperfections” leans into the harder sound of the scenes Fist of Five emerged from in the early 2000s. A more technical track, while staying true to the band’s roots around the edge of the hard/metal sound that they cut their teeth on.

The track “Can You Hear Me” uses the emotional acoustic ballad as a foundation to build their sound on top of. Creating a blend of textures that is unique to them. “Can You Hear Me” is the kind of song that defines Fist of Five’s sonic palette.

“Farewell My Friend” is a triumphant end to Sparrow Road. A colossal sound back the vocals as they put everything into this final track.
