IBG Interview – 8 Questions With… July

To be a successful musician, you must be willing to create your own path and never be afraid to do what feels right to you. Our recent find July seems to get this.

We caught up with the soulful R&B artist to get a little deeper. Enjoy the interview here:

First off, why do you go by the name July?

I pretty much went with JULY because I was born on the fourth of that month. Hot summer nights are the one!

How would you describe your sound?

I would’ve described my initial sound as R&B neo-soul. However, nowadays I wouldn’t say that my music has a specific style. If I had to label it though, I would just say versatile because you don’t know what to expect.

Which artists have had the biggest influence on July?

Lionel Richie, 50 Cent, Linkin Park, Vybz Kartel, Phil Collins, Tears for Fears, and pretty much most of the golden age blue-eyed soul artists.

How do you hope to connect with the listener?

I hope to connect with the listener through my lyrics and the emotion conveyed within my music.

What is your songwriting process? How does a track come together?

I write music either alone or with two of my friends. The track comes together if there is a strong mutual agreement between us. That’s the only way we’re able to proceed with an idea. If I’m writing alone, I would usually proceed instinctively.

Tell us about your latest music video for “Nrvana”

NRVANA is a love song about a reunited love that was once lost. It’s inspired by an event that happened to an old friend of mine.

What advice would you give other artists pushing forward in this new music business?

The advice I would give to other artists is to not be afraid of who you want to be. Whether it’s the way you look or how you make your music, don’t be afraid to be yourself.

How does the next year look for July?

The next year for July will contain more music, more listeners and more surprises.
