IBG Interview – 5 Questions With… GUIELDU

GUIELDU
Spread the knowledge

One of my favorite parts of running IndieBandGuru is the wide assortment of music that is sent to our desk. We have discovered amazing artists and sounds that, without this platform, we probably would have never heard. Enter our brand new find GUIELDU. The contemporary Celtic music project hails from the relatively unknown area of Asturias. A small principality in Northwest Spain along Europe’s Atlantic Arc.

We had the chance to sit down with the group and dive a little deeper into their sound and who they are. Enjoy the interview here:

Welcome to Indie Band Guru! For our readers who are just discovering your music, how would you describe the sound and essence of GUIELDU?

GUIELDU: We define our sound as Contemporary Celtic music. At its core, GUIELDU acts as a bridge between tradition and modern sonic landscapes. We take traditional instrumentation—such as whistles and fiddle—and combine them with contemporary structures, cinematic atmospheres, and modern production. It is a powerful, evocative sound that is deeply rooted in our homeland, Asturias, but intentionally crafted with a global audience in mind.

You have a very distinct identity that breaks away from typical cultural expectations. Tell us about your homeland and how it shapes your music.

GUIELDU: That is a fundamental part of who we are. We hail from Asturias, a small territory tucked away on Europe’s Celtic fringe and within the Atlantic Arc, right next to Galicia. When people think of the Iberian Peninsula, they often imagine dry landscapes and flamenco, but our reality is completely different. We belong to the green, misty finisterres of the European Atlantic coast. Our heritage is deeply connected to nations like Ireland, Scotland, and Brittany. That rainy landscape, our ancestral lore, and the shared Atlantic folklore are in GUIELDU’s DNA. We are the product of that Atlantic magic.

Merging traditional folk elements with contemporary sounds can be a delicate balance. What is your creative process like when building a track?

GUIELDU: This kind of fusion has always happened; traditional music isn’t static, it has evolved for centuries, and we are just the next link in that chain. Usually, a track starts with a traditional melody. From there, we compose arrangements that fit.

Let’s talk about your latest release. What can you tell us about the story, the concept, or the inspiration behind this music?

GUIELDU: “Memories de Deva” is our debut album, and it is a perfect representation of our musical philosophy and that Atlantic cultural exchange known as “inter-Celticism.” Conceptually, we explore the deep connections between Celtic nations, as well as the evocations of 19th-century Romantic Celticism: nature, mythology, and the deep melancholy of the sea. Musically, our goal is to capture both the raw energy and the emotional weight of Celtic music. We want to take the listener on a cinematic sonic journey, and we truly hope your readers enjoy diving into it.

What’s next on the horizon for GUIELDU, and what do you hope international listeners take away from your music?

GUIELDU: We want to keep breaking borders. Even though we come from a specific territory and a genre that is considered a niche today, we truly believe that music is a universal language and that the Celtic spirit has a massive global family. Currently, we are fully immersed in our tour, which will take us to various festivals across Spain and France, and we are already working on our next album. We are incredibly excited about bringing our music to America and helping listeners discover that there is a vibrant, green, and mystical Celtic world beyond Ireland or Scotland—a unique corner of the map called Asturias.
