The freedom of a band that has the ability to make music on their own terms without always trying to please someone else is extraordinary. There is much more musical style than what is prepackaged in neat little boxes by mainstream radio. Our latest find AWOOGA and their original style has them on the fast track to recognition.
The threesome from Sheffield in the United Kingdom is made up of Tam Ali – Vocals and Bass Guitar, Taz Ali – Drums, and James Borrowdale – Guitar. The Awooga genre is hard to define as it blends powerful alternative rock with progressive and experimental influences. I guess th best way to classify it in today’s terms would be Space or Stoner Rock. The guys are not out to make the next big single but want their music to stand out and connect to the listener in a way that is more than just aural but as a full experience.
The end of July saw the band release their newest EP Artifacts. The 5 track record spares no expense in capturing the listeners attention and refusing to let go. From the spacey beginning of the opener “Dwelling” and its jarring synth sounds you want to pay close attention to see what comes next. Lead single “Where The Others Go” is dark at times with a winding guitar melody contrasting nicely with the drawn out vocals. The powerful “Tide” ties it all together with aggression and sound coming at you from all angles to combine into a tune of force. The music video shares in the high energy. Enjoy it below:
This seems to be just the beginning as AWOOGA is now set for a full European tour with Amplifier this coming October. Keep on the lookout for big things and keep listening at: http://awooga.bandcamp.com/
