William Patrick Corgan is emotional and honest in his newest solo single “The Spaniards.” Better known as Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, the singer-songwriter is going by his full given name for his forthcoming solo album, entitled Ogilala, which came out yesterday.
With raw vocals and stripped down instrumentation, “The Spaniards” is an outwardly simple but moving and effective song. Corgan finds beauty in simplicity. “Take me as I am” repeats through the song’s chorus, growing more pleading with each restatement.
Alongside the single, Corgan also released its music video. With a psychedelic vibe, the video for “The Spaniards” emphasizes the song’s dreamy and cosmic atmosphere.
Corgan recently announced his upcoming silent film, Pillbox, which is directed by artist and longtime collaborator Linda Strawberry. Set to the music of Corgan’s soon to be released album Ogilala, this is a film inspired by a hero’s journey.
The video for “The Spaniards” incorporates clips from the film. Opening in black and white, the video slowly transitions into color as the song progresses and develops. Brief vignettes are strung together in a dream-like sequence, fading out of color by the end of the song.
