There’s something deliciously unhinged about dancing at the edge of the apocalypse, and Dusty Edinger knows it. On his latest single, “Welcome To Our Demise,” the drummer-turned-frontman wraps end-times anxiety in sun-soaked harmonies and power-pop polish, proving that existential dread goes down easier with a killer hook.

Dusty Edinger is actually employing the “beautiful melodies/terrible things” strategy on “Welcome To Our Demise” and wields it well. The track is an upbeat power pop shuffle with an indelible guitar hook and strong yacht rock vocal harmonies that will have you thinking of your old 10cc records. There’s even a cool, mildly neoclassical guitar solo that will catch you by surprise.

The lyrics, however, get a bit more serious and deal with the idea that our world is careening toward disaster. Lines like “If you’re not terrified then maybe you should be” are so beautifully harmonized that you may not catch their intent the first time around. The pop smile will keep your mind in a good mood.

Edinger is absolutely a top tier pop craftsman in the classic sense. His Beatle influence is clear but his sound leans more towards the smooth 70s style of Toto, Steely Dan, and The Doobie Brothers. It’s uplifting to hear the strains of these leveled-up players and singers working in sync to create a song with the chromosomes to be a national radio hit.

“Welcome To Our Demise” is a solid sender that both invokes the good times of decades past and the contemporary social commentary that is so much a part of modern life. Dusty Edinger has the skills and the vision to combine these ideas into something perfect, new, and uniquely his. If this track doesn’t get you dancing, your demise may have already happened.
