Some records don’t just play — they unfold. Just Like In The Movies, the latest release from alt-pop-rock outfit Esso, isn’t merely an album; it’s a reel of emotion, memory, and momentum. Across its shimmering guitars and tightly wound rhythms, Esso crafts a collection that feels both universal and deeply personal — the kind of album that turns the ordinary into something cinematic.

The sound of Esso sits at the crossroads of nostalgia and modern polish, drawing from classic alt-rock textures while embracing the melodic precision of contemporary pop. Think somewhere between The 1975’s emotional sheen and the earnest energy of early Jimmy Eat World. The result is an album that feels familiar yet fresh, reflective yet ready to move.

The album opener “Break Me” was originally a single for Jared Mancuso’s solo project but works as a perfect opener for Just Like In The Movies setting a tone of fun energy that the rest of the album delivers. The pace slows down a little for the emotion to come through on “I’m Your Destiny.” There is a touch of Weezer influence here on a song written about George McFly from the classic Back To The Future film. Movies are a big part of the songwriter’s life and that is evident not only in the album title but the flow of it.

The pop fun truly comes through on “Enough” with its bouncy bassline and beat as well as a fun lyrical delivery. An earworm that crawls in quickly. Pop rock us back with this one.  As it fades it we all secretly demand more. “Go On” continues the fun but with a more angsty feel that bleed into grunge alt-rock but holds onto that pop feel with some fun claps and overdubbed melodies.

Some pop punk influence comes through on “Dark Addiction.” Esso proves they can expand their sound without alienating the listener. Everything ties together nicely while not feeling like we are listening to the same song over and over again. (A big complaint of mine on many pop albums.) “Kiss of Death” expresses this even more with its distorted guitar melody but adds a little dark energy to the album. The chorus still leans towards pop to keep it all together.

In a world full of ‘one hit wonder’ singles, it is refreshing to hear a full album that can be played start to finish to tell a story and show that a band can stretch out and still have their own unique feel and sound. Have a listen to Esso and prepare to immediately want more.
