It has been a little while but our favorite flute duo is back with one of the most well known classic rock songs of all time. After a year off due to a serious arm injury, Steve Markoff and Patricia Lazzara are here with their version of the Led Zeppelin classic, “Stairway to Heaven.”
As I was growing up, you could not go into any guitar store and not hear some guitarist fiddling with a guitar off the wall playing “Stairway To Heaven.” To the point it was actually made fun of in the movie Wayne’s World from 1992 with the ‘No Stairway – DENIED’ scene. Reality is that the song is a truly beautiful song to play. We know how Markoff & Lazzara love to take beautiful songs and make them even prettier so it was no surprise that the duo now takes on the track.
For this arrangement they brought in new accompanist Dave Malyszko on piano. The beauty jumps at you right away as the flutes soar like an eagle while the bass of the piano keeps us grounded. The group doesn’t cut it short either as their version clocks in at over 7 minutes. Keeping true to the Led Zeppelin approach to the song.
The song will be part of the group’s 4th album together. The long-awaited world-music collection, For The World is scheduled for release on June 1, 2025. We are looking forward to what other classic songs they tackle.
Overall Steve Markoff and Patricia Lazzara’s “Stairway To Heaven” is a bold and beautiful reimagining of a timeless classic. It’s a testament to their exceptional flute skills and ability to find new life in familiar territory. This unique and captivating interpretation is sure to resonate with fans of AOR and unique versions of songs they know.
