‘Exceptional Chaos’ by Ryan Saranich is exceptionally exceptional.

A musician’s inspiration to create can come out of nowhere. As an example, Barry Gibb famously mentions how the noise when going over a bridge inspired the rhythm to “Jive Talkin”. All musicians have noteworthy inspirations behind their work. Chick Corea made a huge impression on our featured artist Ryan Saranich. With his passing in Feb. 2021, Ryan decided to pay homage to Corea. The fuse was lit. Ryan had a concept he wanted to bring to life. He puts together a band from the Charlotte Jazz scene. Behind Ryan Saranich’s leadership they deliver a six-song extended EP, Exceptional Chaos.

The opening track “Like Minded Tyrant” show us they mean business. A fretless bass becomes our host, greets us with champagne and shows us around. Rightfully so, brass plays where the vocal line would normally lay. Sharp twists and turns keep us engaged and on our toes. An organ creates suspense at optimal moments. However, the drummer steals the show. His soft hands remind me of old Isotoner gloves commercials. Those same hands turn to stone on his command. Point blank, the drummer’s performance takes the track over the top.

Escape with Ryan Saranich

More laid back is the very next tack “Escape Plan”. This single reminds me of getting dressed up and chilling in a jazz lounge. Although the tempo is slower, the intensity does not waver. These guys seem to lay low and catch fire. Reminiscent of battling dancers in circle formation. You don’t know who’s going to jump in the center of the ring, you just know it’s going to be spectacular. Improvisational riffs, extended sections, no rules… it’s the essence of jazz.

My favorite track of the EP is “Innerspace Outerference” for its less is more approach. Every instrument shine’s and is giving its own moment in the limelight. Each one of those moments feel custom made, like a fine tailored suit. The searing guitar lead is super sweet and adds a dynamic new sound. A punch. That’s the kind of lead that inspires impromptu air guitar performances from its listeners. I love those moments in music.

Keep up with and follow Ryan Saranich!!!
