As the world emerges from a rather difficult past few years, there are some benefits. A great amount of new original music is now hitting our ears. Songs that were written and perfected over a time of isolation, and yet freedom. Our new friends from Barkhouse spent their pandemic time putting together a bunch of songs resulting in the release of their newest album Paper & Ink.
What originally started as a one night event called Barkhouse to showcase some old songs turned into a full project. Will de Zengotita (vocals/guitar) was joined on stage that night by friends Olmo Tighe (drums/vocals) and Jay Mort (bass/keys/vocals). The reaction prompted the formation of the official band Barkhouse.
The result of this collaboration paired with an influx of time created a plethora of songwriting. Together as Barkhouse, they perfected the unique emotional American sound and became a force on the Brooklyn, New York music scene.
On August 12th, Barkhouse released their first official full-length album Paper & Ink. The 11-track record creates a specific mood that truly weaves its way into your soul. Opening strong with “Truly Gifted”, the band attacks with emotion and smooth energy. Elegant sounds provide the backdrop for enticing vocals that draws the listener into the story. The times of isolation and self-discovery can be heard and felt on “Don’t Need My Headphones.” Looking deep into oneself always creates great music.
‘Pray For Rain’ with Barkhouse
The mood continues on “Pray For Rain” as the music builds around an emotionally fueled lyrical delivery. Harmonized vocals create a big sound even with the laid back style. There is a lot here to get sucked into. Pretty and poignant. This continues on “Found A New Baby” with a mellow tone. There is an Americana feel but Barkhouse expands way past that with a wide assortment of noises creeping into the mix.
In an album of evocative lyrics “Be My Star” stands out with both stormy and smooth elements pairing perfectly to keep the listener’s attention throughout. “Homemade Crown” starts off with a simple minimalistic tone letting your mind relax before a heavy mesh of synth sounds takes off to a higher place. By the time all the pieces come together you are fully enveloped by the track.
Paper & Ink concludes with “Jumonville Affair” which takes true history into the music. It describes the events that led up to the French and Indian War through the eyes of a migrant laborer. The deep lyrics mixed with an elegantly built soundscape paints a bold picture that is full of imagery.
Overall, Paper & Ink is a beautiful record that is worth the listen from start to finish. It will leave you refreshed and inspired and relaxed but also looking for more. Keep an eye on Barkhouse on their website www.BarkhouseMusic.com.
