Joemayk

Music is truly universal. We recently caught up with Joemayk who started his career in South America, then in Europe. He keeps expanding and making truly original music. Enjoy the interview:

First off, where does the artist name Joemayk come from?

First of all, Mayk is my name, there’s not much to tell, just that my mother decided to write it differently and we keep asking her why! LOL, if we talk about Joe let’s say it’s the compound, it sounds different in Spanish so I decided to eliminate a letter that bothered me!

How would you describe your sound?

I never know how to describe it, every day I keep looking for the sound that identifies me but it’s difficult, it’s a mix of groove guitars and stories, I think what I have most clearly is my way of writing, it always revolves around something but I do not usually tell it directly

After starting your career in Venezuela and Spain, what made you decide to start making music in English?

Most of the music I ever heard in my life has been of bands and singer-songwriters in English, the way of singing and modular opens up many ways to write, in addition, the music scene in Spanish has changed a lot over the years, new generations because of the records companies doesn’t know who is tom petty or Aerosmith or rolling stones or tina turner, if you want to keep in the market is almost an obligation to make another type of music as reggaeton for example… and it is something that i have now very clear not to do! LOL well, i don’t know, English is universal, but i’ll continue composing some songs for my audience in spanish, that if… always on my line

Which artists have been the biggest influence on your music?

A long and varied list regardless of style… right Now i could think in Queen, the weezer, Aerosmith, Radiohead, Rolling Stones, Pearl jam, John mayer, Steve Ray Vaughan, Tom Petty,  Franco de Vita, hector Lavoe, Cassia Eller, Rod Stewart, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Roy Orbison,  Withney Houston, Elton John, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Bryan Adams, Stereophonics, Oasis, Fito Paez, Fito y los fitipaldis.

Tell us about your songwriting process. How does a song come to you?

A chord brings a melody, then it finds it’s lyrics depending of the mood you were in, and at the end, the production ends up giving meaning to everything

What do you hope the listener will take away from your music?

Each one ends up owning what needs and gives the sense that his imagination wants to give! its the beauty of making songs.

What advice do you have for other artists creating original music?

Do it Honestly, improve your style day by day, never stop musical study and listen a lot of music, different music making your own investigation what ends up expanding your borders of your musical imagination.

What is next in the plans for Joemayk?
