Anyone who has been part of the music industry knows that it is a tough business, especially for women. As much as that has changed over the past decade there is still a long way to go. Be one of the people trying to help make this equality come sooner like our recent discovery Jennifer Hill.
The musician, singer, activist, mentor, teacher, and mother has been a force for good in the music scene for quite a while. Jennifer Hill has taught and coached many students through the years that have reached their goals of reaching the top of their craft. She also is known for supporting activism for women in the arts and domestic violence survivors in any way she can. Jennifer launched SWAN [Support Women Artists Now] Day CT 15th years ago and has kept it going, allowing more than 200 musical acts to perform on her stages.
In addition to all that, Jennifer Hill has written and recorded many songs over the years, always trying to perfect her own talent. Her latest album Love Bomb was produced with the help of Vic Steffens of Horizon Studios. It is a heart on the sleeve record that broaches some difficult topics of abuse.
The album kicks off with “Gemma Star” and its soulful country Blues feel. There is a power that comes at the listener right away letting them know what they are in for. Jennifer Hill’s vocals are delivered with a passion that is intoxicating.
The elegant piano of “The Plane” eases us into the track before the energy builds with some big guitar chords bringing some rock. As the layers build the full soundscape is filled. Her ability to sing in different styles within one song is truly impressive. The horns of “Can’t Say” add even more layers. The sultry vocal delivery complements the background beautifully as it all blends together seamlessly. The listener can picture themself in a smoky Jazz club with Jennifer Hill behind the microphone.
The record delves into even more unique sounds with “Civilized” and its interesting sounds pushing the track forward. Knowing Vic Steffens for a while, I can hear his influence here. Excellent songwriting with pro production. The duo isn’t afraid to experiment, but it always serves the emotional core of the song.
Overall Love Bomb is an explosive, intimate and rewarding listen. It’s an album that doesn’t shy away from the messy realities of life. The voice of Jennifer Hill is a force to be reckoned with – at times soaring and anthemic, at others intimate and confessional, always carrying a genuine weight of emotion.
