I’ve never been to Oklahoma, let alone Oklahoma City. I had to check a map to refresh my memory of its location. Sitting on the Texas northern Border, I began to wonder if there’s a cross pollination of styles between the two states. One thing is for sure, Blueprint Tokyo has a sound all their own. We’ll have to ask them if there’s a little Texas influence in there somewhere. The band hails from Oklahoma City and has been putting out music since 2021. After a mix of singles and EP’s, they are back with a new EP, Blue. We will be focusing on the lead single “Odysseus”.
The track wastes no time bringing us intimately close. Now within earshot proximity, emotions lay bare. Losing out on love can leaves us so many unanswered questions and trauma. I get a sense of a heavy heart and doubt. Doubt of what could have been had one made different choices. Perhaps better decisions? Beautifully matching the despair of the words are the vocals. Conveying pain that feels not only real, but fresh.
From a music composition standpoint, “Odysseus” is like an intricately woven Persian Carpet. Every instrument has its place and every note shines to its fullest. As the synths thicken the backdrop, the guitars bright ways illuminate our path. The rhythm section scores big points on this single. Bass grooves naturally lay down the foundation, but the drums are the special ingredient. Brilliant tempo changes are only the tip of the iceberg to an exemplary performance. Memorable drum parts are a signature of a great drummer.
