Gwen Proves To Be "A Cure That Will Save the Both of Us"

It’s difficult for a band to blend genres and still sound good in all of them. There are so many factors that can go wrong. However, Gwen has mastered this with their new album, “A Cure That Will Save the Both of Us.”

Gwen is an alternative rock band based in New York City. Blending genres, using electronics, and incorporating intense lyricism, they create an art rock sound that is unique and sticks with you.

One of the most powerful emotions is nostalgia. That is exactly how Keep Me Alive feels. To me, it sounds like a song I would have heard as a child in the 2000s. The light-hearted sound meshes well with the message of the song. The narrator knows their flaws and failures, but they feel as if they have found someone they can trust with those thoughts. The ending is what really sticks out however, with an inclusion of electric, techno sounds that almost fit into the atmosphere of a club.

Just because a song is slower doesn’t mean it’s not as impactful. The steady sound of Cigarette doesn’t drag it down. In fact, that sound makes the lyrics hit that much harder. There is a push and a pull in the lyrics, where the person misses the one they lost, but also knows that this person wasn’t good. This culminates in the harmonies in the bridge, raw and touching.

Perhaps the best example of the mixing of genres Gwen so excels in is in Cryogenic Chamber. The song starts extremely simplistic, with just the sound of an acoustic guitar and the deep voice. The voice doesn’t even have to speak for the somber attitude to come through, just the tone of it is enough. Halfway through the song is when things really get interesting though, as the guitar increases in intensity, and more voices and underlying sounds join in. The full sonic space is filled.

Is it possible to feel nostalgic for a time you didn’t live in? With the song Athena, I definitely can feel a mix of 90s and 2000s inspiration. As the goddess of wisdom, Athena is called upon by the singer for guidance. The rawness of the voice mixes perfectly with the strong rock guitar. Sonic shifts come from all angels. Even when the saxophone is brought in to calm everything down, it only works for so long before the guitar returns to bring back the chaos. It only ends when the piano overcomes it all, simple and light. Complete journey of a song.

There is something special about the sound of Gwen, because it’s hard to put into words. Every song feels so different and yet so interconnected that it really needs to be heard to be understood. “A Cure That Will Save the Both of Us” is out now for you to see what I mean.
