India-born and Switzerland-based musician Ajay Mathur is out with a single called “Forget About Yesterday,” from his latest album, Little Boat. It’s a fun song with a great message and a distinctive sound that Mathur has been perfecting throughout his career. He is a truly dynamic artist that puts his heart and soul into his work, and you can feel that in each verse. Passion is what makes music truly worthwhile and he has it in spades.
This song is best described as an experience. Ajay Mathur combines so many elements into his music that, while you’re not quite sure what the hell is going on, it’s definitely worth giving it a few listens in order to see everything that’s been incorporated. It’s a mix of Americana and pop, with an Indian flair to it that truly makes this song exceptional. You can’t stand still while listening to “Forget About Yesterday”- it practically begs you to get into the rhythm and fully appreciate the song for what it is, a light and upbeat journey through a creative mind.
Mathur’s voice isn’t the most impressive sound in the world, but it sounds great with the music and doesn’t get totally upstaged by it. It’s not that he doesn’t sound good, of course, but it’s just a touch of a letdown to go from a wholly new sound to vocals that are a bit on the garden variety side of things. That being said, it didn’t really take away from the overall enjoyment I found when I was listening to “Forget About Yesterday”. The pros vastly outweigh the cons and after a couple of listens, I could barely notice how his voice alone is lacking.
Ajay Mathur is a prolific songwriter
“Forget About Yesterday” is basically about living in the moment and not letting things that have happened in the past get to you and not panicking over what the future will bring. He insists that when the stresses of daily life seem like they’re going to crush you, to simply let it go. Easier said than done, but it’s uplifting enough with supportive lyrics and a fun sound that can help you take your mind off of current struggles for a few minutes. Sometimes, it is enough to just get a breather and be reminded that you’re not alone in your struggles, and this song is perfect for that. Personally, I can use Marthur’s generalized faith in the listener to get through it all. It’s the little things that make the day brighter.
I very much like this song. Sometimes you need something entirely new and this is exactly what the doctor ordered. I can confidently say I’ve never heard a song quite like this. Mathur did what most artists only dream of and bent genres perfectly in order to create something original and genuinely unique. I can’t get enough of it and will definitely be checking out more of Mathur’s music soon, and I encourage everyone to do the same- you’re going to enjoy this quirky, brilliant sound.
