Ehson Hashermian Gives a "Message" We All Need To Hear

With an indie-rock sound and a persistent theme of optimism, Ehson Hashermian’s new album Message is exactly what we need in the world right now. We all have rough days, days where we can’t seem to find anything positive to say. However, Hashermian shows us that just because optimism is difficult to have does not mean it should not be fought for.

Ehson Hashemian is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from southern California. In his early days, he helped to form The Jakes, who would later rise to fame as alternative rock icons Young the Giant. Hashemian’s sixth album as a solo artist, “Message,” is all about the artist’s struggle to make a deep connection with others and the importance of staying optimistic during tough times. While known for his indie-rock roots, this album uses strophic form more commonly heard in older African music, creating a unique sound that is simply a joy to listen to.

Sometimes all it takes is love to make things feel better, even if that other person is struggling too. The song “Anything” focuses on this messaging. With an up-beat sound and a catchy chorus, the song is pure light-hearted fun. It feels like being with a good friend in summer, with laughter, fun, happiness, and sunshine abound.

However, even with another person, pain can still exist. “Been Through” shows a deeper look into the struggles of day-to-day life. Despite this, the song makes sure to show that there is always hope. People may have bad days, but when they are there for each other, it can make problems feel lighter. There is some light in the sound that leans away from the dark.

The African inspirations really come into play in the song “Move,” with its funky beat coming from a mix of classic African drums and guitar combined with an indie sound. It seems chaotic as layers of sound grow, similar to how life can be sometimes. Ehson Hashermian uses the differing tones to make one coherent song that sounds like living your own life.

Sometimes, pain remains. However, there is always hope if you push through. The final song of Message, “When There Was You,” is all about the pain of losing someone close to you. The light guitar gives this track a hopeful feel through a dark time. The instrumentation makes it seem that the sadness and anger can be overcome. There is a pain in Hashermian’s vocals here but a glimpse of light shines through. This song is slower than some of the others, but it works to its advantage, helping to drive home the themes the album is trying to convey.

Music can be a powerful source of comfort in hard times. I know that when I’m upset, one of the only things that can calm me down is music. That is why Message works as well as it does. Ehson Hashermian succeeds in writing songs that provide an optimistic view even in grief or loneliness. Songs that are light-hearted enough to listen to again and again. Hashemian reminds us that music can still encourage, comfort, and connect people—and that’s a message worth hearing.
