From “blacking in and out in a strange flat in East London” to dressing up as Elvis for his latest music video, Frank Turner has a way of entertaining his fans.
Frank Turner Channels The King
The 34-year-old from the UK is set to debut his new EP, Mittens, on March 4, and has given a preview of the title track on his Vevo channel. The rest of the EP remains a mystery, but from what we’re given in “Mittens,” I expect only good things from it.
The beginning of the video starts out in a dimly lit room, with vibrant reds and blues leading up to an Elvis-clad Frank Turner moving in slow motion on a stage. The fade-in of the music leads to a blend of piano and guitar that seems to fit almost perfectly with the whole slow motion effect.
Does the evocation of the King have anything to do with the song? Doesn’t seem like it — but then again, what music video actually makes sense these days? Turner’s slow motion dance moves are the most entertaining part of this experience, but the very anti-love lyrics we hear while watching this pseudo-Elvis speak straight to my soul, and I’m not even against the idea of love at all.
There’s something in the emotion of Frank Turner’s voice that makes you feel everything that he’s singing. He’s able to achieve an extremely wide range of vocals and it’s making me feel like I’ve sung some “ignored love songs” myself. While you’re trying to gather all of the emotions that have escaped from you and put them back in their box, you’re introduced to the love interest of the video, or at least that’s what is to be assumed. There is no one else in the room but Turner and this woman, and she is my least favorite person in this video.
I mean, I don’t know her or anything, but if she’s the one ignoring Turner’s love songs, then I don’t want to know her! This song is surprisingly powerful, it’s making me a bit emotional (as if you couldn’t already tell). Anyway, if you’re the type of person that wants to see their feelings put into a song, then you’ll definitely want to check out “Mittens”.
If you say that you’re not excited for the rest of Frank Turner’s newest EP after hearing it, then I’m probably going to have to say you’re lying.
