Music is meant to make a difference. Our recent find Geo Moon puts his innovative rock sound to work in his latest track “Bring It On”.
We had a chance to chat with the interesting character and get a deeper look into his mind and music. Enjoy the interview:
First off, how did the name Geo Moon come to be?
Geo is an abbreviation of my actual name (Georgios) and Moon is referring to my love for outer space and the unknown. Metaphorically speaking, the moon is like a middle station among known and unknown. Moreover, is also symbolic and related to the topic of Wolves and Werewolves (we’ve seen it in sci-fi films) which I feel strongly connected to. Wolf could be my spirit animal, or I could have been one in another life, provided that such theories are true and not just myths. Some things cannot just be explained. 😊
How would you describe your sound?
My sound can be described as Electronic Rock drawing elements from Hip-hop and Electronic music.
My productions are usually consisted of edgy guitar riffs and ambient synthesizers combined with fast paced vocals resulting in a futuristic blend which can also be characterized as Nu Metal, Rap Metal, Alternative Metal or Industrial Rock.
Which artists have had the biggest influence on you?
Well. I grew up listening to Metallica and they were my childhood heroes (I still have Kirk’s Pluck, got it while in a concert). However, as I was entering my student life, my influences started drawing from the Alternative Genre from artists including Linking Park, 30 Seconds to Mars, Korn and Limp Bizkit. If I had to choose one, I would say that Linkin Park has been my major influence and it’s reflected on my music as well. The way they united two contrasting (but also so similar) worlds of Hip Hop and Rock had a huge impact on how I perceive music and songwriting. I miss them. I miss Chester. R.I.P.
How does a song come together for you? What is your songwriting process?
This is a nice question. I do not really follow a specific tactic. Every song is different, and I tend to ‘’go with the flow’’ with inspiration. Some riffs were inspired while playing my guitar while others have been written while practicing on my piano skills.
There are also many cases where I open a project on my D.A.W. and brainstorm ideas till I come up with something that resonates with me (‘Till I feel the vibe’ in simple words). I prefer to have the song written (Chord Progressions and some riffs) prior to the production process but this is not a rule of thumb as some projects started straight in my D.A.W. One thing is for sure, I prefer to create music first and lyrics afterwards.
Your newest release “Bring it On” is a powerful rocker. What can you tell us about recording it?
Thanks for the kind words. Sure. Well, I like to work in my own space and on my own pace (that could be a bar, it rhymes 😊). ‘’Bring it On’’ and most of my songs have been recorded/produced and mixed in my personal studio. I feel very strong about the production process and I love sound engineering. One can strongly argue that it is a 100 % D.I.Y. project. However, I would not decline the possibility to record some songs in commercial studios in the future.
Can you give us some insight into the story within the song?
Sure. With pleasure. The lyrical content of ‘’Bring it On’’ discusses topics such as esoterism, the journey within one’s self and awakening. The result of individual awakening can lead to collective awakening. And when that happens, it can direct us towards the collapse of capitalism, a system defined by the greed for power which it’s nothing more than a game/pile of cards.
It’s up to every individual to start questioning information available and the things we ‘’know’’ from our experience in order to achieve awaking and help others to do so.
The punch line of the song lies in the chorus:
‘’Beware all of you, the world is waking up, beware, we are not afraid, it’s just a game of cards.
‘’All of you’ is referred to a specific group of people and I would like to leave the guess to you 😊 .
Share some advice for other artists creating original music?
It sounds cliché but: PRACTISE, PRACTISE, PRACTISE. Either it is guitar, Piano, vocals, songwriting, or Production. My advice would be: ‘Attack’ that thing that you love and be prepared for a lot of crap music during your first steps, which is something absolutely normal and fine. It takes away the pressure for perfection which most of us creatives have. You start small and you build on it. You start bad and you become good along the way. It is simple as that. If one acknowledges that it is absolutely fine not be good (in the beginning of their journey) it prevents a lot disappointment as well.
And in the end, who am I to argue when you have AC/DC explaining it perfectly in one sentence ?
‘’It’s a long way to the top, If you want Rock and Roll’’
What is coming next for Geo Moon?
During the lockdown I had a lot free time to create a whole album which is going to be released as singles throughout 2020, with the next one coming out in August. If you enjoyed ‘’Bring it On, wait till you hear what I have next for you. In my next releases I’m experimenting even more with electronic sounds in order to achieve recordings where contemporary regarding their production but Rocky in their essence.
It took me a few releases to figure out my own original sound and is going to be revealed release after release in the following months. I would like to look at ‘’Bring it on’’ as the first step of a new journey. Finally, I’m planning to do some remakes/remixes of some of my old songs (as bonus content included in every release) in order to give these songs the credit and attention they deserve.
