The most exciting music discovery for me is when I find a band that is able to mesh a variety of genres and sounds into something new and fresh. This creative freedom opens up all barriers and offers something new to the musical world. Our recent discovery Southernmost Gravy is doing just that with their innovative indie rock/edm style.
We caught up with the Utah based band for a dive into what they are and what they are shooting for. Enjoy the interview here:
First off, where did the name Southernmost Gravy come from?
During one random day of 8th grade, my friend and I decided we wanted to create a band together. When we got home that day, we started working on name ideas. We went to a random word generator and picked “southernmost”. I don’t know why we liked it so much but we kept that word. I text one of my friends to give me a random word which ended up being “gravy”. We put the two together and got “Southernmost Gravy”.
How would you describe your sound?
It’s a unique fusion of indie/rock and edm/dance. It’s super cool when we put all these sounds together live. It’s a very cool blend of rock-infused electronic beats.
Which bands have had the biggest influence on you?
Within the Utah music scene, 19 Miles Per Hour, Miss Valentine, Hollow Hill, Muninn, Miicah, and so much more have had pretty big influences on us. Outside of the local music scene in Utah, American Authors, Crash Adams, Neon Dreams, Hotel Mira, Comfort Club, and more as well have shown so much support to us and always continues to inspire us to create the best music possible.

How does a song come together for Southernmost Gravy? What is the songwriting process?
All of the instrumental beats/tracks that are currently out are created by our producer, Ben Adams (synth player). During our live shows, we play a few jams which are created by all the members.
What do you hope the listener takes away from one of your songs?
Throughout all of our music, we hope that people can just listen to our music and feel the joy and happiness that life gives the world.
Share some advice for other artists creating unique sounds.
Don’t worry about what others think. Just create music that you truly enjoy and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
What does the future hold for Southernmost Gravy?
We have an album releasing on June 30th titled “Freshly Squeezed Lemonade”. It features our top indie/rock tracks which will be a nice change from our edm tracks currently out. Other than that, we’re planning a North American tour next year and planning out a few shows in our home state, Utah!
