Take a man out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the man. My ongoing thought as I listened to Kurt Hagardorn’s new album An Analog Man In A Digital World. From New Orleans to North Carolina and now a Portland Oregon resident. He’s moved around a bit. His heart must still be in New Orleans as a touch of southern flair shines throughout his album.
Shining simplicity can be found in ‘767’. Every musical component is played with gusto. Heavy-handed guitars and hard-hitting drums provide the perfect backdrop. Kurt’s vocal delivery raises the intensity of the music. He sings like the PA might cut out. This track is raw just like rock n roll is supposed to be.
Get ‘High In The Shadows’ With Kurt Hagardorn
‘High In The Shadow’ offers a classic rock n roll feel. Big hooks, bright chords, dancing piano keys roar like a fire log thrown onto an open flame. The underlying rhythm guitar’s subtle southern flavor is sweet. Party vibes come courtesy of the electric guitar. Reminiscent of The Steve Miller Band single “Rockn Me”.
The most rocking track of the album is ‘Tina! Tina’. Variations within the verses and seemingly spontaneous syncopated stops give the song a live feel. I was hoping for a guitar solo, and Kurt did not disappoint. When a song makes me want to pick up my air guitar, I know it’s special. This song checks every box.
I love the title of this record. His music connects from an era that was lighthearted and fun. The tones and rhythm of the album radiate positivity. Lyrically that’s another story. How Kurt brings the two together is his genius. A southern touch his signature. All together, we have a unique and solid album to listen through. Pull up a chair.
