Maverick Smith Gets Together ‘With Friends and Imperfections’

Maverick Smith

When like minded musicians work together for the greater good amazing things happen. Forget the idea of competition in the music world. By collaborating and sharing talents the results are much larger than just great music. Our recent find Maverick Smith proves this with the recent album release With Friends and Imperfections.

After a 10 year break, songwriter Sean Boynes has felt the need to make music again. He put the word out and an army of talent responded willing to lend a hand. In fact, 22 collaborators were recruited to help put together the new With Friends and Imperfections album under the Maverick Smith name. This includes Grammy™ winners, classic rock royalty, indie rock icons, world-class bagpipers, a killer horn section, and even an orchestra. The diversity of the group lends to the diverse set of songs that make up the collection.

Opening up with the in your face rocker “Holding On,” Maverick Smith sets the tone right away. This will be a wild ride that will get your heart pumping from start to finish. The speakers are full of sound with a powerful guitar melody, strong vocals, and some piano fills to really add the feel of a bunch of musicians jamming together for the fun of it. That fun shines through on “Do I?” as well. Sing along choruses, steady drums, and horns add to the party. We are all welcome to join in.

Party With Maverick Smith on ‘Do I?’

Maverick Smith seems to take a slightly darker turn with “Break My Heart” but the fun of the music remains. Strong female vocals lead the way here as an impressive rhythm section pushes the track forward. And yes that is bagpipes you will hear adding some flavor. “Spookshow” continues this vibe with more fresh rock n roll.

The speed slows down a little with “Health and Politics” as Maverick Smith turns to a more emotional delivery. Don’t misunderstand, this is not at ‘ballad’ speed, just a slightly eased pace to let us catch our breath. The record picks right back up with “Dirty Teeth” and its southern rock tone. The music has a way of putting us right there in the room with the band as if we were seeing it live. Great production without the use of computer tricks and gimmicks.

The album closes with “Thinking Of You” and its speedy piano led energy. Guitars grind, vocals soar, and big sound comes from all angles as it has been for the entire listen through. The talent throughout is incredible. Proof of what can be produced by a bunch of skilled musicians coming together for the love of the craft.
