Rockford Road are Virginia residents who have devoted their sound to classic rock. Since 2016 they have been churning out music. They rally for one last hurrah. Epilogue will be their fourth and final album. I must confess, I was unsure as to the definition of epilogue and looked it up. Epilogue is the perfect word to describe the moment. Now, let’s dive in.
Song placement on an album is important to establish a flow. These lads chose well with the first track, ‘Place To Hide’. There are three components that make this track pop. First are the happy drunk shuffle drums. Second and playing into the drumming pattern is the way the rhythm guitar is played. Lastly and the cherry on top is the organ. That organ sings and soars. Everything else is icing on the proverbial cake.
Bluesy and ominous is ‘State Of The Union’. Hard life facts are delivered to a backdrop of rock. A distorted lead guitar shadows the sentiment of the lyrics. Said lyrics, remind us of what’s happening every day to us are. As we face our daily personal struggle, corruption and malfeasance continue. Yet ‘State Of The Union’ rolls on with a head bobbing bounce. Execution on this track is spot on.
A highlight of the album is a song that features a female vocalist. Upbeat and lowkey driving is ‘Doing Fine’. Again, the organ does some heavy lifting. Everything about this single is melodic, and borderline indie rock. There’s a soft approach to the instrumentation. Playing with feel, pays a king’s ransom.
Rockford Road lets loose and serve up a couple of surprises. The female vocals featured on two tracks are a great touch. While the band doesn’t stray far from their sound. Their tempo changes throughout the LP offers variety. These are veteran musicians who have giving their lives to music. Their discography is a testament to their dedication. I’m sure they will continue to play on after Rockford Road. I just hope they keep us in the loop.
