The new music industry is led by individuals who realize that music and business must mix together. The art must meld with hard work to achieve success. Our recent discovery Ann Patrice seems to have things headed in the right direction. We caught up with the singer, songwriter, and publisher to get behind the scenes of her music and Step In 2 The Glow publishing company. Enjoy the interview here:
How would you describe the Ann Patrice sound?
My sound is very diverse. I like to sing in different styles according to the song type.
Which artists have had the biggest influence on you?
I’m a late 80’s to mid 90’s type of girl when it comes to music, so my interest and aspirations period would be from that era. Although I admired many, I would have to say that Shirley Murdock was my biggest inspiration of them all. She just took you there and wasn’t afraid to go in the opposite direction with her lyrics and sound. I think it’s where I get my boldness from lol. I love to go left.
Tell us about your songwriting process. How does a song come together for Ann Patrice?
You know, many people ask me this question, and honestly the best way I can answer it is I zone out on what’s going on around me and zone in on the title of the song. I always start with the title, and at the time I’m not always sure of the song type in which it will be, (as I write for all genres) but it just comes naturally I guess. I get excited when I write because I feel that every song is for or about someone who will receive the message in a positive way and help uplift them.
What is the current state of the music scene in Cincinnati, Ohio?
Cincinnati is not that big of a city and though we have great talent and a lot of hidden talent that resides here, we’re not that big publicly, music wise.
You are quite the businesswoman as well. Tell us about your journey into publishing?
I wrote my first song “Leave You For My Husband” two years ago. I was unaware at the time that I could write! After writing that song, it encouraged me to write another one…so I did. Next thing you know, I’m working on writing a third song lol so I figured I might as well look into getting my own publishing deal as well, which I did. There’s one thing about me that I stand very strong on. When I put my mind to it I always do it.
How did you come up with the name Step In 2 The Glow?
Besides it being creative and different, the name Stepin2theglow was actually formed by my manager P. Payne. We knew I needed to come up with a name for my publishing label and he presented it to me. “Stepin2theglow” kind’ve speaks for itself; are you ready to step into your destiny? Stepin2theglow! Lol
Share some advice with business-minded singer-songwriters?
I always say ‘sky’s the limit’, literally! If you have a dream, pursue and go out and get it! It’s obtainable and nothing can stop you but you. Even during times where you feel defeated, keep pushing!!
What does the future hold for Ann Patrice?
I’m working on several projects, and currently waiting for production to start for a film in which one of my songs will be included. In my spare time, I continue to write music which now holds a catalog of 60 songs
