Drewk Allows us To ‘Dream’ with Interview

Drewk

Creating music is a very personal thing. We each have our own internal sound that gets influenced by what we hear and are exposed to. Putting that all together for release to the world is a step that takes courage. Our recent find Drewk has put in the time to develop his skills and is now ready to share new music.

Although only 21 years old, Drewk has been creating music for over 7 years and exploring different sub-genres of EDM to create a sound that is uniquely his. His react track “Dreams” is a beautiful compilation of this. A chill vibe welcomes you in but there are twists and turns all throughout the song to keep you guessing the direction it will go in next. Slow sweeps, big beats, deep bass. This is mesmerizing music that the listener just needs to sit back and let wash over them.

We had the chance to chat with the talented producer to get a deeper look into his process and where he goes from here. Enjoy the interview:

First off, tell us about the name Drewk?

The name “Drewk” is a spin off on my personal name “Andrew Karvelis.” I have always liked the  name “Drew” over “Andrew” so decided to use that mixed with the first letter of my last name, making a whole new word.

How would you describe your sound?

As of recently I have loved making very laid back chill sounds. I enjoy creating tunes and sounds that build emotion, so I feature alot of backing synths that slowly progress and get louder throughout the tracks making a moody, yet slowly intensifying vibe to it.

Which artists have had the biggest influence on you?

In the past, when I was trying to create more harder eletronic music, such as Dubstep, I really enjoyed the sounds Skrillex made. Skrillex was the one who first got me looking into creating eletronic music. More recently however, it has been the future bass sounds of Flume that have really brought out my love for making music.

You have been creating music for a while now. What draws you to it?

Ever since I was young, music has been incredibly meaningful to me. I really connect with the sounds, and while some people sing along to songs, I think to them. Music has had a powerful effect on my mood and getting me through difficult emotions. Every musician has there own emotion to there songs, and I have been trying to bring out mine, and portray the moods I wish to convey to the world of music.

How does a song come together for you? What is your songwriting process?

I always start with the backing chord progressions that carry through the intro and before the drop. This sets the whole tone for the song and from there I just keep listening to it adding more sounds and refining different parts. After the song has been “completed” i spend several days or hours refining it, listening to over and over trying to find different  aspects to refine.

Tell us about your most recent track “Dreams”

“Dreams” was a track that was inspired by when I was feeling more on the down side overnight recently. Thats a trend for me, I get down and then I make music. I essentially made the entire track within 24 hours because I made the chords, and the rest just fell into place. Originally the song was going to be more upbeat, but when I was expierementing with the bass notes I accidently misplaced a note a bit higher then intended… but enjoyed how it sounded so much I ran with that instead.

Share some advice for other artists trying to stay in the game?

I think musicians need to really connect with there music, and put their emotions into it. Don’t make songs just to make songs or put another track, really try to vibe with your music.

Give us a look at the future of Drewk?

I want to in the near future start working on vocals for tracks, or find singers willing to collaborate. Lyrics add a whole new layer of depth to the emotions you can convey in songs that I really want to tap into.

Keep up with more sounds on his SOUNDCLOUD.
