The current civil unrest has been a muse for much music recently. Artists are pouring their true thoughts into their music. Our recent find G.B. has done just that with his ew single “No Peace”.
We caught up with the talented wordsmith to get a little deeper behind the scenes. Enjoy the interview:
First off, tell us about the name G.B.?
G.B is an acronym, stands for “God Bless” ( Blessing the microphone with a GOD given talent)
How would you describe your sound?
my sound is predominantly Boom bap hip hop (East Coast style that uses bass {kick}drums and snare drum). I sample jazz, funk, soul artist. I also collaborate with live bands. my sound is organic. The lyrical content is always vivid and detailed. I paint pictures with words.
Which artists have had the biggest influence on you?
Im a student of RAKIM intricate word play and delivery. KRS ONE for his conscious political rap. 2pac for the ability to communicate what was going on around him. Bob Marley for making timeless music… All these artist for bringing someting new and different to music.
Your first single “No Peace” seems to have a message behind it. What can you tell us about it?
I’m a believer that every human being has the God given right to defend themselves against any opposing force that threatens their lives. statistic data show that US police kill civilians at a much Higher rate than any other wealthy country. for years the masses have been protesting for a change. Im not promoting senseless acts of violence against cops. I’m simply chanting the Black panthers theme “self-defense, liberation and power to the people”
You brought in legendary lyricist ‘Casual’ from the Hieroglyphics Empire for this one. How did that happen?
Social media! (instagram) allows you to connect directly with different artists all over the world… I’ve always been a fan of Casual and the whole Hieroglyphics movement. He posted a video on IG teaching artists on how to monetize and generate money from their musical composition. It’s very rare in this business to see an artsit whos establish to give you insider tips for free… I reached out to him and we made it happen.
How does a song come together for G.B.? Share your songwriting process?
It depends, sometimes I hear a beat and get inspired to write. I’m out and about in the world, ill see something that sparks an idea and ill write a song about it.I dont have a set formula but most of my songs are based on personal experience…
What do you hope the listener takes away from your music?
I hope the listeners feel and appreciate the passion , the work i put behind my music. Most importantly they understand the message delivered in every somg.
