IBG Interview – 8 Questions With… Lulu Musiq

Lulu Musiq

Success in the music industry is no easy task. The hard work and dedication must become a daily ritual. Our new friend Lulu Musiq has that needed passion.

We caught up with the beautiful singer and songwriter to get a little deeper into her rising success. Enjoy the interview:

First off, what is it that draws Lulu Musiq to create music?

I have this innate desire and passion to express myself by creating, writing, and singing! I draw inspiration from literally everything! I absorb inspiration from so many things: nature, personal experiences, people, circumstances, observations, my imagination and what I call spiritual/cosmic downloads. I gravitate to good music that inspires me! I love and grew up on Motown music, 80s b& 90s pop, R&B, soul, country, reggae, Eritrean & Ethiopian music, and being exposed to that variety of music really inspires me to write.

How would you describe your sound?

I would describe my sound as a perfect and timeless mixture of inspiring, authentic, exciting, ol’ school, yet current, good music that comes straight from the heart!

Which artists have had the biggest influence on you?

So many, such as Sade, Lauryn Hill, Whitney, Etta James, Aretha, Tasha Cobbs, Toni Braxton, Michael, Celine Dion, Janet Jackson, Dolly Parton, I mean the list goes on. Currently I am gravitating to Doja Cat, Nao, and Amber Mark! Doja Cat is an excellent songwriter and plays around with pronunciation, melody and rhythm a lot which is refreshing. Nao’s voice is amazing and unique and her songs are amazing! Amber Mark is so interesting to me. Her voice, her sound, her song choices and style is so on point and has that 90s vibe that I live for! Another fellow Swedish artist is Snoh Aaleghra who is just unique in so many ways! I love her.

What training have you had to have such a beautiful voice?

Thank you. No training at all except singing all day long anywhere and everywhere, hah!

How does a song come together for you? What is your songwriting process?

Different ways depending on my mood and vibe for the day! Sometimes it is listening to a beat and the melody just comes out and the lyrics follow or I walk around with a random melody in my head that I lay down in my phone and then I revisit it during a writing session.

What do you hope the listener will take away from a Lulu Musiq song?

Inspiration and vibes.

Share some advice for other artists trying to get noticed in the music industry?

Work really hard on your craft on a daily! Don’t skip days! Make sure you have a passion for it and give it your absolute all. Don’t let ANYBODY discourage you or make you change! Be smart! Study the industry and don’t sign any contracts before having it reviewed by a lawyer and then look through not yourself at least twice. Have as many people that you trust look at it. Surround yourself with musicians and learn from them. Be inspired by them. Ask a lot of questions. Listen. Create a marketing plan. Set aside a budget and spend it wisely. Let it take the time it takes. Slow progression just means you can develop your sound and tap into your vulnerability and authenticity even more. Have fun and sing, sing, sing! Let yourself be inspired. Be confident and again, have fun!

What does the future hold for Lulu Musiq?

Growth & Infinite abundance!
