Trapped in a box that doesn’t make sense, searching for a way out, and simply desperate for any escape after a certain length of time – when it comes to feeling the ensuing darkness of the FM dial, there are moments in which any sort of satisfaction of freedom from the very thought, are impossible to uncover, but for The Dead Daisies, they’re determined to help more people avoid this experience through the release of their powerful new single and music video “Face Your Fear.” This supergroup doesn’t self-righteously address their audience in this release, and although they have not been shy about pushing the sonic envelope in previous instances, there’s something very smooth and familiar about what they lay down in the studio for this track.
Despite the dark hue of the narrative in this song’s main riff, the lyrics we’re hearing feel a lot more like an element of catharsis than they do an admission of angst-ridden drama. This band wasn’t trying to write a variation of something they’ve already done before in “Face Your Fear,” but instead getting to the basics of what makes heavy rock sound smart. We all know where they attained the kind of presence they have here, and if it’s like their live performances, I think their future concerts could be some of the most effective put on by a modern super group in recent memory.
2022 has been a celebrated year for hard rockers despite all of the turmoil we’ve experienced collectively in the American underground, but I would still have to rank The Dead Daisies’ “Face Your Fear” as being a cut above the rest of the songs in its class. This band has got a lot of contemporaries that are trying to accomplish many of the same goals they hold close, but I haven’t had the opportunity to hear very many acts that have the kind of natural talent that this one does when they offer a single as challenging to pull-off as this one is.
