There are those occasional bands that pop up on the scene soon after forming and make an impact right away.  Sometimes this momentum carries over and a long successful career is ahead of them, other times that one popular song you hear is the only song you will ever hear and the band disappears into obscurity before you know it.  The key to avoiding the latter is for the band to keep working hard and not resting on their laurels.  This seems to be the case with our latest find, Big City Supreme.

The band formed in the summer of 2010 after a last minute decision to play a show 8 days later.  There were some early struggles and structural changes do to the haste of their decision but they seem to have it on the right track now.  Big City Supreme is a funk punk band out of Edmonton, Alberta Canada with an interesting sound combining the vocal style of The Offspring mixed with quality funk guitar styling, similar to early Red Hot Chili Peppers.  Late last year they put out a 3 song sampler and have been playing shows around Edmonton and Calgary to expose new fans to this sound.

The sampler begins with ‘Gold Dipped Diamonds’, a fun song where you can hear the Offspring influence right away.  The guitar solo work shows off guitarist Dallas Ference’s skills early and often.  ‘The Upper Hand’ is a darker feeling song with a descending bass guitar line that makes you feel like you are being led to the bad side of town for a party you might get robbed at.  Enjoy the ride but watch your back.  The closer of the disc ‘Gone For Good’ is a funky little ditty that will keep your body moving all the way through the track.

Let’s hope Big City Supreme keeps working hard to keep the momentum going and puts out some more fun music soon to keep their fans satisfied.  There is some excellent potential here to really make an impact on the Canadian music scene.
