We always try to keep an eye on the careers of artists that we have featured in the past. It has been 3 years already since we last featured our friend Joey Stuckey and his record ‘Six String Soldier. Lots have been happening in that time for Joey. We had the chance to catch up with him for a chat and get in the know of what is going on for him now.
Welcome Joey! 2020 has been a big year for you – get us up to speed with what you have been up to so far!
Thanks for having me! Well, 2020 started off with a bang with my trio’s packed show at the world famous Whisky A Go Go. We recorded the show and should have some video and audio from that performance on the world wide web soon LOL.
Next we did a lot of partying during GRAMMY week in LA and some performances as well, not to mention attending the GRAMMYS where Lizzo and Demi Lovato stole the show!
Now, in early March, I am off to one of my favorite places NYC to a world premiere at the United Nations of “Wild Karnataka”. The soundtrack was recorded by my friend and GRAMMY artist Ricky Kej. Then it is off to Santa Barbara, CA to work once again with my friend and mentor Alan Parsons. He is working on some new material from 90’s alt rock band Dishwalla at his Parsonics Studio.
We are dying for some new Joey Stuckey music – any plans to drop something new soon?
Yes, I am still figuring out the exact configuration, but at the very least by summer we will have a live album. Other projects include working with my friend and musical hero Ron Saint Germain on an EP, but that probably won’t happen until fall.
You are an accomplished song writer. Do you write everyday? What advice would you give someone wanting to write music but not sure where to start?
I used to write every day and I would even stop whatever I was doing to get the song down. Now however, I write at least once a week and can hold ideas in my mind until I have a chance to get them down.
But, if you are new to the craft, you should try and write as often as you can and not be discouraged if you don’t like the results. Like everything else, good things come in time and you can’t rush it. The other piece of advice I have is to always finish what you start. Again, even if you aren’t happy with the results! Like the old joke says, “how do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice! Practice! Practice!!”
Would you share with us what has been the best advice you have gotten in your career?
That would come from three people. First my dad who told me “the best way not to have a misunderstanding is to have a clear and honest understanding at the beginning of your relationship”. The next came from my friend and Berklee online professor Ellen Francese “don’t worry so much about narrowly defining your music. You have such a unique voice as an artist that people will be drawn to your work”. And finally my dear friend and mentor John Krivit—“Please be involved in the community of the audio engineering society, we need your voice”. He wasn’t speaking about my musical voice but my voice as an advocate for education in general and for blind accessibility in particular.
The first piece of advice I always follow and from John and Ellen, I heard others telling me to trust my judgment and follow my heart and instincts!
Do you have a favorite song on main stream radio right now?
Well, I am still gaga over Demi Lovato’s single that she debuted at the GRAMMYS “Anyone” and I am also still pumped abut Taylor Swift’s “Lover“ album and also “Romance” from Camila Cabello. And though it isn’t out yet, I am very excited for the Beatles tribute album from Al DiMeola.
