Even after gaining huge worldwide success, there will always be that simple joy of an artist to do what they truly love. It all starts with writing and singing songs. That passion never leaves no matter what successes you have. Take for example the legendary Ann Wilson and her band Heart.
The career, as well as musical gifts of Ann Wilson and Heart, are legendary. She has been performing with her equally talented sister, Nancy Wilson since Heart hit it big in the mid-1970’s. In the last 40 years they have sold over 35 million records worldwide. Even after all that, Ann Wilson still pushes her greatest gift, and first “calling”, singing. Her voice is considered to be among the best ever, with its vast range, amazing power, and sheer musicality. It has inspired legions of great singers, across every genre of music. Now Ann Wilson wants to stretch out as a singer, performing things not in the ‘heart’ shaped box.
To pursue this she has launched The Ann Wilson Thing! She is very excited to get back to intimate performances in small venues. Much different than her career in Heart. Since October 2015, The Ann Wilson Thing has been performing in select venues. Ann says, “I’m excited to play unusual songs in small places. I am excited to push my creative and vocal boundaries.”
Last month The Ann Wilson Thing! released EP #2 – Focus. The 4 track record released on Rounder Records welcomes all lovers of rock and blues music. The record opens with the Jimi Hendrix classic “Manic Depression” showing she can still belt out a high energy rock song with her powerful voice. There is a softer side on “Don’t Give Up”. Here you can truly hear the emotion in her voice as she pours everything she has into the song. The EP closes with the bluesy-rock track “Anguish”. Her wide range is shown as Ann nails a gravelly delivery paired with melodic flows that put together a song that drips with raw energy.
