Taylor Grey Talks “Never Woulda Letcha”
Grey: Never Woulda Letcha is about having a secret crush on someone who’ve been friends with forever. You see them go through a heartbreak and begin to think if you were her/him, how this wouldn’t be happening, how you would never break their heart. It is about that forsaken love that you are yearning to be real but there risk is too big as you don’t want to ruin your friendship with them. The essence of Never Woulda Letcha is about wanting love, something anyone can relate to.
With no particular relationship or crush in mind when writing this song, I was more influenced by the other Pop musicians music at that time, like Justin Bieber’s “Where Are U Now,” which essentially changing the future of Pop Music, making a instrumental hook a staple. I wanted to try to create something of that nature, and delve into that world then came up with a few piano riffs and went from there. I also took lyrical cues from “Closer” by the Chainsmokers ft. Halsey, and tried to tell a more specific story with concrete details, as opposed to the abstract place I used to write from a lot.
