Against the rainy backdrop of the music video for “Leave This Town,” the playful antics of Summer Rain feel especially meaningful as if to reference a youthful exuberance that gets harder and harder to fathom as the years go by. Juxtaposition is a key theme in both the video for this song and the track itself, and I would even say that without a certain degree of conflict, I don’t know that “Leave This Town” would be able to drive its narrative home as smoothly as it does here. Summer Rain has received accolades for their melodies, but this is an instance where they’re really flexing as songwriters are creators.
The harmonies that serve as the centerpiece for us in this single are blushing from the second they first come into focus forward, but they’re not overindulgent in the least.

If anything, this is a pretty conservative look in comparison to some of the content I’ve heard this band to date. I feel like Summer Rain doesn’t want to push themselves too hard in “Leave This Town,” almost as if to challenge their limitations as a group and force a more disciplined aesthetic out of their most dedicated recording sessions.
A fun, British-style pop track that feels particularly on-point as the winter season winds down to a close, “Leave This Town” is pure indie passion the way it’s always been meant to be enjoyed. Summer Rain is one of the brighter points in a COVID-darkened Canadian underground once filled with a lot of promising young alternative acts, and if they’re able to find an audience with this single on the southern side of the border, I’ve got a feeling they’re going to find the coveted commercial momentum that has evaded them – and the vast majority of the bands in their scene – so far.
