Erik Hansen: 'The Eternal Conflict' review

Nostalgia is easy to fake, but it’s much harder to actually earn. This full-length debut pulls it off convincingly, channeling 90s alt-rock and classic rock without ever feeling like a costume. The Eternal Conflict marks the first LP from Seattle rocker Erik Hansen. He’s joined by a tight, road-tested band: drummer Kip Rondorf, bassist Carl Larsson, and guitarist Robbie Houston.

Hansen has been building toward this moment for a long time. His musical roots go back to a childhood full of music. A father who played guitar and pedal steel helped plant those seeds early on. From there, a flood of influences took hold, from Nirvana to AC/DC to Metallica. Those early sounds eventually led him through his own bands Fallen Angels and metal outfit Skelator. From there, his solo career has picked up serious momentum. Last year’s run of Seasons of the Wind EPs, released in three parts, introduced his solo voice. They drew praise for how he blends rock’s history with something more current. Carl Larsson has played alongside Hansen since 2002, giving the rhythm section a chemistry built over two decades. Guitarist Robbie Houston also helps engineer and produce the material. Kip Rondorf rounds out the lineup on drums. He pulls his inspiration from the legend John Bonham and anyone who can lock into a serious groove.

The Eternal Conflict kicks off with “Far Away,” and it sets the tone immediately with rocking guitar work. There’s a clear 90s hard alt-rock vibe running through it, part grunge, part arena rock. Hansen delivers his vocals with a straight, controlled tone. He lets the instrumental flourishes take the lead instead of fighting for the spotlight.

Energy stays high on “Pieces Of Yesterday,” another 90s-style rocker. It’s built on that driving Seattle energy Erik Hansen clearly grew up on. Background vocals thicken the chorus and add a welcome extra layer. The accompanying music video leans into that same feeling. It visually traces a yearning for the past that matches the song’s title. Watching it alongside the track adds real weight to the songwriting. It turns a strong single into a more complete piece of storytelling.

A different side of Erik Hansen comes through on “Fight To Live.” The rock elements are still present, but the tempo slows and more emotion pushes through. His vocals reach for real feeling here, and the underlying message lands clearly. The struggle is real, but it’s one everyone can fight through. The tempo stays slow on “She Dances,” and the emotion bleeds through the speakers again. Everything here is steady and straightforward, which lets the vocals carry the real weight of the song.

Pace picks back up on “Dreaming In The Dark.” A powerful beat pushes the song forward with real force. There’s a darker edge running underneath it, matched by some nice guitar fills throughout. Erik Hansen adds a little extra gruff to his vocals here too, giving the track an appropriately heavier feel.

For more diversity we get “Seasons,” the album’s most experimental moment. Sparser instrumentation leaves room for listeners to bring their own emotions into the song. The pace slows even further, but the darkness and pain still come through clearly.

The Eternal Conflict doesn’t sound like a typical debut LP. It plays more like a veteran musician finally putting his full body of influences into one complete statement. Hansen and his band move comfortably between hard-charging rockers and slower, more emotional material. That range is what makes the record hold together so well. It’s a strong first outing. Given the momentum he’s built over the past year, it likely won’t be his last.
