IBG Interview – 8 Questions With… Ateo Feo

Ateo Feo

Music allows us to speak our minds. Sometimes even that freedom can be restricted if ‘society’ considers we went over the line. Do not let this stifle your creativity. Be you! Our recent discovery Ateo Feo is most definitely being himself. That may ruffle some feathers but isn’t that what music is supposed to do?

Enjoy our interview with the interesting character here:

First off, where did the name Ateo Feo come from?

The name Ateo Feo means “Ugly Atheist” in Spanish. I wanted my name to have something to do with Atheism but I didn’t want it to be so obvious to everyone.

How would you describe your music?

Weird, catchy, corny, funky, creepy, off-kilter, rocking, rolling, strolling, dark, funny, gay.

Which artists have had the biggest influence on you?

Marilyn Manson, Eminem, Steely Dan, Jamiroquai, Weird Al, Primus, Tool, Weather Report, Chuck Mangione, She Wants Revenge, Depeche Mode. Just to name a few.

What is your songwriting process? How does a song come together for Ateo Feo?

Depends on the song. Sometimes I write the music first and then the lyrics. But usually I write the lyrics first and then the music. So I will have to sing a melody to the words that I write then come up with chords, riffs, drum beats.

What do you hope a listener will take away from your music?

To remember my song. I just want to be able to make people feel something that they will remember. Whether it’s good or bad.

We hear a few of your performances have been cut short. Tell us your wildest on stage story?

I’ve had my performances cut short for taking my clothes off and simulating fornication with dolls. I have also had my mic cut off when I was just playing an acoustic guitar and my song lyrics were too much for some establishments to handle.

Share some advice for other artists making controversial music?

Don’t. Lol. Your life will be easier and you will get booked in more places if you make “safe” music. Honestly, an artist should strive to do whatever his heart desires. You should just write songs that speak to you and if they happen to be controversial so be it.

What does the future hold for Ateo Feo?

AIDS, Cancer, Death, Success, Naked Women, Pesos, Vegan Food, Love…. Who knows?
