There will always be a special place in our hearts for the songs of our youth that shaped our lives. Those songs inspired not only our musical tastes but often helped us through the struggles of growing up. That music should always be honored. Our friend Jerry Burton does just that with his newest record Great American Soul Book, Reimagined Vol 1.

The veteran entertainer, producer, composer, and arranger, has been producing music for over 40 years now. Jerry Burton started out as a 12 year old on the chitlin circuit of his native Alabama and rose to perform on major world stages. An artist that never lost his fervor for the music that made him what he is today.

His latest effort brings together a lifetime of work from the great American Soul song book. These are songs we all know and love but Jerry Burton adds his own theatrical flair to keep them fresh and memorable. Accompanied by a who’s who of session musicians brings the full sound to life. Names such as Lee Smith on bass, Tom Lawton on piano, Eric Johnson on drums, and Kevin Joella on guitar bring the talent to match the record.

The album opens with the true classic “Soul Man”, a song that everyone knows and can dance to. Jerry Burton makes it his with his smooth vocal delivery that turns up the energy. His efforts hit the modern retro pocket perfectly.

Jerry Burton shows off his vocal range on “Tired of Being Alone” reaching highs and lows that creep into your soul. The emotional style is impossible to turn away from. Some amazing background vocalists lend their help. The smooth Otis Redding classic “Try A Little Tenderness” continues this emotion-laden delivery that just draws every listener in.

Jerry Burton Original “Sha La Girl”

He also manages to freshen up one of my all time favorite songs of the era “My Girl.” After hearing this song literally hundreds of times, I can say the Jerry Burton version is up there with the top performances of the track. Again he adds his own flavor with bog horns and additional flourishes. A master composer of well known songs.

Jerry Burton contributes an original track to the album as well in the form of “Sha La Girl” There is definitely some influence from his disco days here. There is little hope in not finding your toes tapping and head bopping along. The changes throughout the song will keep the listener’s attention throughout.

Overall, just a fun album that brings back memories but adds that freshness to keep us entertained.
