There are few places in New York City better suited for a breezy summer concert than The Rooftop at Pier 17. On August 19, 2026, the venue hosted Max McNown’s stop on The Summer Vacation Tour. The roof was packed with about 3000 fans, offering the perfect scale for a rising name in the indie-folk scene to connect directly with a dedicated audience.

McNown took the stage with his casual yet energetic, down-to-earth presence. Opening the night with “Love Me Back” he gave the crowd the vibe they were there for. He continued an introspective tone with “Turned Into Missing You.” It was clear early on that the audience was all in on the performance. Despite the open-air layout, the show felt remarkably small and grounded. McNown frequently paused between songs to chat, sharing the background stories behind his lyrics. This helped turn the rooftop into what felt like a personal space, even with the giant buildings and Brooklyn Bridge within eyesight.

Max McNown Knows How To Perform A Full Show

The setlist was well-paced, keeping the crowd engaged without any major lulls. A particularly cool moment that I truly enjoyed was a smooth transition from his original track “Something to Someone” into a cover of Coldplay’s “Yellow” that he made his own. It was a smart, crowd-pleasing addition that showed how well his acoustic-leaning folk sound translates to big indie pop melodies.

Later on, the band shifted gears by weaving his song “Marley” into a brief cover of Bob Marley & The Wailers’ “Three Little Birds.” It added a warm, easygoing energy to the set welcoming fans to sing along. It fit the river breeze perfectly, giving the mid-show setlist a nice change of pace.

As the evening progressed, the band kept the arrangements clean and focused, allowing Max McNown’s steady vocals to take center stage on tracks like “St. Helens Alpenglow” and “Hotel Bible.” A real highlight for longtime fans was the inclusion of “First Born Daughter.” Recently added to his tour rotation, the track carries a clear emotional weight, and it was clear some of the crowd was waiting for this one.

From Cool Breeze to Shared Energy…. and Warmth

What started as a comfortably cool evening began to shift as the show drew to a close. With fans tightly packed and singing along, the collective audience energy caused the rooftop to get noticeably warmer towards the end of the performance. I was forced to back away a little bit. Don’t misunderstand, this was a good thing but I needed a little fresh air.

For the encore, the band came back out with a surprisingly upbeat, folk-styled cover of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” It got people moving before Max McNown brought things back down to earth with his hit “A Lot More Free.” The show wrapped up with his other popular hit, “Better Me for You (Brown Eyes).” (My personal fave.) Ultimately, it was a thoroughly enjoyable, authentic indie-folk show that left a crowd of dedicated fans heading home happy.
