What happens when seduction and destruction ride in the same car? The R Train Band answers that question with “Mariah,” a song built around a vixen who takes no prisoners and leaves the wreckage to everyone else.
The Brooklyn-born, now South Florida-based power trio is made up of guitarist and vocalist Jeffrey Black, bassist Blackjack, and drummer Mike Annese. The R Train Band origin story runs through a subway ride and a fire chief’s midlife reawakening, but the sound they’ve built together draws from Black Sabbath, The Police, and Grand Funk Railroad, filtered through modern muscle. That mix has already carried them through a strong catalog of music videos including “The Raven” and “Rock On.” “Mariah” builds on this same foundation : distortion-heavy guitars, a rhythm section that hits like a freight train, and a genuine reverence for the arena-rock era without sounding stuck in it.
A rocking guitar lick starts us off as bass and a steady drum beat join to power up “Mariah” from the start. The R Train locks into a classic rock groove that never lets up. Jeffrey Black’s vocal delivery carries a sludge rock edge that sets it apart from a lot of straight-ahead hard rock, giving the vixen at the center of the song a rougher, more dangerous image than a cleaner vocal take could manage. That grit fits the character perfectly: a woman driven by hunger for freedom and power who tears through the streets refusing to be contained. The guitar solo is a clear highlight, and it earns that spotlight. It givesBlack room to stretch out while Annese’s drums and Blackjack’s bass keep the whole thing locked to the pocket underneath.

The video leans fully into that same dark glamour. It cuts between a sultry woman dancing her way through the chaos and footage of the band tearing through a live performance. The two threads reinforce each other well. The dance-floor energy sells the danger and excess at the center of the story, while the performance shots ground the song in the raw power of three musicians actually playing it. Neither side overstays its welcome, which keeps the video moving at the same clip as the track itself.
“Mariah” doesn’t ask its subject to be redeemed, and that refusal is what makes the song rock. She’s not a cautionary tale. She’s a force the band is clearly having fun chasing. “Mariah” captures that thrill without ever pretending to catch her.
