Some debut singles introduce a band. Others make a statement. Our recent discovery The Expo accomplish both with their new release “Eclipse.” The band delivers a track that immediately showcases their ability to blend classic influences with a fresh and engaging sound. The South Korean duo arrives with a level of confidence that many artists spend years developing, crafting a song that feels both familiar and distinctly their own.
From the opening salvo, “Eclipse” creates a mood that is both nostalgic and invigorating. Echoes of legendary acts like Dire Straits, Tears for Fears, and even The Smiths can be felt throughout the song. The Expo pull inspiration from decades of influential music and reshape it into something authentic and personal. The shimmering guitars, steady rhythm section, and expansive production give the track an anthemic quality that begs to be played loud.
What truly elevates “Eclipse” is its emotional depth. The vocals carry a sense of longing and conviction that draws listeners into the song’s atmosphere, while the layered instrumentation reveals new details with each listen. There is patience in the arrangement, allowing the music to breathe and build naturally and hook the listener without them even noticing.
For a debut release, “Eclipse” is remarkably assured. The Expo have established a clear artistic identity from the start, proving that strong songwriting, memorable melodies, and genuine emotion remain a winning combination. If this first single is any indication of what lies ahead, The Expo are a band worth keeping firmly on your radar as they continue to carve out their place in the indie rock landscape.
We caught up with the budding rock stars to get a little deeper into how they do what they do. Enjoy the interview here:
First off, what is behind the name The Expo?
-The word “Expo” somehow gives us a distinctly 20th-century vibe, while also evoking a sense of diversity, vitality, and the atmosphere of a lively festival. Although we are a rock band, we create music that is not confined to any single style. We felt that this naturally connects with the idea of an expo — a place where many different things are presented together under one larger framework. We also liked the fact that it is short, impactful, and easy to pronounce almost anywhere in the world. After a long period of consideration, we finally chose the name “The Expo.”
How would you describe your sound?
-We describe ourselves as a “Retro-Flavoured Rock Band.” To us, that means being artists who live in the present while embracing retro influences without being entirely confined by them.
Our sound is primarily rooted in popular music from the 1960s through the 1980s, but our music is not simply an imitation or reproduction of the past. It is contemporary music in its own right — infused with a retro flavour.
Band music that captures the nostalgia and glory of 20th-century music while still feeling alive in the present — that is the sound of The Expo.
Which bands have had the biggest influence on you?
-As both a listener and a songwriter, the bands that have influenced me the most are undoubtedly The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. However, rather than consciously pursuing the forms or styles of their music, I would say their influence exists somewhere deep within me.
Other artists who have influenced me, directly or indirectly, include David Bowie, INXS, Phil Collins, Queen, and Talking Heads.
How does a song come to you? What is the band’s songwriting process?
The way a song begins is different every time. I often find inspiration unexpectedly — from everyday life, people, experiences, events, images, and various forms of art. The starting point can be anything: a guitar or bass riff, a drum loop, or something else entirely. There is no fixed formula.
What all our songs do have in common, however, is that the process behind them resembles something like wine, cheese, or slow food — things that require time to mature.
We never rush the process of making a song. From the earliest idea to the final version, every track is carefully built, refined, and allowed to evolve over time. We let the songs mature through the passage of time and changes in perspective, continuing to shape them until we feel we have arrived at the best possible version.
Your debut single “Eclipse” is setting the tone. What can you tell us about it?
“Eclipse” was first drafted in 2019 and worked on throughout 2020. After years of refinement and careful shaping, it eventually became the version you hear today. Rather than delivering a fixed or explicit message about how the listener should think or feel, the song was intentionally made somewhat ambiguous — allowing each person to imagine different scenes and experience their own emotions through it.
At the same time, “Eclipse” can also be seen as a calling card and blueprint for where The Expo, as a Retro-Flavoured Rock Band, is headed in the future.
What do you hope that listeners take away from your music?
We want our music to stay with people for a long time, rather than being lightly consumed and forgotten after a short moment. We also hope it will be deeply experienced — whether under good lighting or with eyes closed — rather than simply played as background music.
We want listeners to fully absorb the interplay between each instrument, the texture of the sound, and the atmosphere carried by the music itself, and for those feelings to leave a strong and lasting impression on their minds.
What does the future hold for The Expo?
Well, first of all, we hope to grow as much as we possibly can. We’d also love to keep releasing albums and go on many tours in the future.
More than anything, we hope the songs we release going forward will lead The Expo toward a path of lasting prosperity and high-quality musical achievement.
